The Red Dragons fell to a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the annual friendly fixture at the Racecourse, but the coffers were boosted with a crowd of over 11,000 assembling to witness the action. Welshman Eifion Williams scored twice on his debut in the second half, after the visitors had stormed into a 3-0 lead in the first period with virtually all the squad getting a run out for the home side.

Boss Brian Carey was looking at the bigger picture and beyond the result on the day: "We won the second half 2-0, but the main thing that we said before we started today was that we wanted to continue doing what we had been doing in the last ten days or so.

"It was more of a fitness session, that was what was important today, try and do the basics really well. We didn't do that in the first half, but it is very early days.

"We played the same in both halves, three up front at times but only one up front at others, and the idea, which worked better in the second half, was that we had five or six players getting forward at times and that is something we have been looking at doing. We are quite flexible in our approach, as I say it is early days but it's something we are looking at doing.

"It was important that everybody got a run out, it was important that we did that, and everybody got half a game.

"Steve jarred his knee early on and had to come off at half-time but it looks like he's okay. There is no point risking him at this stage of the season, especially as the result doesn't matter. He felt his knee a little bit so we just took the sensible approach.

"Richard Hope had more time on the pitch than anybody, he had an hour, he's a good organiser and should be a big player for us.

"When you play these games you want to do as well as you can, you can tell that by the players today. When you go two and three-nil down, as a player you want to respond and show what you can do. The lads did that and that's the way the game is now, its competitive.

"It was a great for Eifion [Williams], we know what he can do and it was great for him to get off to such a start to what should be a long and prosperous Wrexham career.

"The new lads have settled in very well, all five of them, both on and off the pitch, they have done themselves no harm. We are hoping that something else might materialise transfer wise the week after next. As I've said all the way along to the lads its just a case of waiting for the phone call.

"We are really grateful to Rick Parry, Rafa Benitez and all at Liverpool for coming down and supporting us, and I've said that all the way along because it means an awful lot to us.

"This club has come out of administration now and we've got to continue moving forward, building bridges and the like with the community. That was something we couldn't tend too previously when we were in administration.

"The previous manager Denis Smith sent so much time fighting administration and he did a terrific job. We are now in a position where we've got to take the club forward and that is something we have got to look at.

"There is a lot of optimism around at the moment but we have got to go out and do our job and that is what we've been stressing to them. Go out, do your job and do it properly. We've got to do the basics eight otherwise we won't get anywhere.

"We played two teams today, one in each half, and we might do the same thing on Tuesday but we'll look at the over the next couple of days.

"Conall [Murtagh] showed some nice touches and he has since he's been here. It was a big step for him today, especially pitting his wits against those that he faced in the first half.

"The new players got a feel of the Racecourse and we want this place to become somewhere that is an intimidating place for opposing teams to visit, so to do that the home players need to be comfortable with the place themselves, they need to learn to love playing here. Conall fitted into that well today.

"We are looking to improve the squad all the time, always looking at quality players when they become available, otherwise you stagnate. We are always on the lookout for good players."
