Brian: We Started Off Well

Posted on: Sun 19 Aug 2007

Two first-half goals from Michael Proctor were enough to ensure a first three points of the season as Morecambe were beaten 2-1 in their first away game in the Football League.

Red Dragons boss Brian Carey was pleased with the three points and especially the showing in the first period:

"I'm happy with the win, delighted with the three points and delighted that we're off the mark in the league and up and running.

"We had the first half and could have scored more goals, but Morecambe definitely had the better of things in the second half.

"I've just said to the players that regardless of the result and how things are going we're building for the future. We know there's things we've got to get better at. We know there's things we have to work at, but I'm delighted with the result.

"I was pleased with the first half.  We've been a little bit patchy so far but as I said we're still working at things and it'll take time for things to work out how we want them to. We're in the middle of a rebuilding stage and things will take time. They won't always be as easy as it was at time in the first period.

"In the first 45 minutes I thought we did well and controlled things, although in the second period Morecambe showed why they had beaten Preston in midweek. They have just come up from the Conference and showed that they have got some good players.

"They got on top at the start of the second half and we couldn't really get back into it at that stage. We were rocking when they pulled a goal back, and to be fair Anthony Williams did well to save a one-on-one chance late on, which would have levelled the score.

"It was always going to be difficult to sustain our first half performance for the full ninety minutes, especially for some of the younger ones who had played 120 minutes at Port Vale on Tuesday. I think that showed during the second half today.

"Michael did well for his two goals and we know that is what he is capable of. That's three goals in a week from him. He showed that form last season when he came here and played a huge part in keeping this club in the Football League.

"Hopefully, he can now continue his goalscoring form. There is more to come from him I'm sure but saying that he needs to keep his head down and work hard."
