Brian: We Have To Stop Giving Away Goals
Brian Little was trying to stay positive after this defeat to Chesterfield because he knew he had seen a number of positive signs, although a number of our old failings were only all too evident:
"Although we have fought back in the second half, we do tend to shoot ourselves in the foot at times.
"I do think they were above us in terms of playing the game, they had that on us, but we still do give away stupid goals.
"The first goal was just frightening really, it comes from a minute or two earlier when Taff was on the edge of his box and missed his kick.
"I could come out here and put a record on, as I seem to have been saying this a few times lately.
"We make a mistake and then we go all silly and nervous for a few minutes. It shouldn't be a real problem, as everyone makes mistakes, but ultimately we ended giving a goal away.
"Then for the second goal, we have three onto one, but try and win a ball we can't win, it ends up on the wrong side of the three of them and we end up 2-0 down!
"At half time, if I had told my team to go and play them off the park, I would be lying and nobody would believe me anyway.
"That almost got us something out of the game, but they have to work, not be frightened, be brave and while we can't kid ourselves, Chesterfield could have scored again, at least in the last 20 minutes we had two great chances.
"It's disappointing that we didn't take one of them. I had spoken to Michael [Proctor] this week about one or two things. He really wants to work hard, but I did tell him that today he would be on the bench and that I wanted him to start showing me what he can do.
"He came on for the second half and he's almost shown me just that, but it was a step in the right direction for him, getting beyond defenders, getting in the right positions, getting chances to score goals. It would have been great for him had he scored today.
"Did we deserve a draw? I don't know.
"The good thing was that we had a go and didn't lie down when they scored their second.
"The disappointment for me is that for two games now we know we could have gotten something out for them both, but we haven't.
"We have to hang onto something positive though and we have found a few little ingredients which will hopefully help us.
"I can't criticise them on the second half display, as they had a go, and even if Chesterfield had scored a third, at least those who were here today would have known that we had had a try.
"It is though too long now without winning football matches and at the moment it is difficult for us, because we are not a better team than other teams. But if we do what we did in the second half today and what we did on Saturday, then we would be alright and we would have a chance.
"So we have to find that formula, the players have to respond in terms of workrate and effort, and we obviously have to find a face or two to brighten things up a little bit - then we have to stop giving away silly goals."
