With a little over 10 minutes remaining, a volleyed goal from local lad Neil Roberts following a Wes Baynes free-kick gave us a 1-0 win over Notts County at the Racecourse and brought with it renewed hope in our battle for survival in the Football League.

A win for Mansfield over Shrewsbury at Field Mill did little to help our cause, but defeats for Dagenham & Redbridge, Chester and of course Notts County means that there are still five team sweating on retaining their precious Football League status.

Dragons boss Brian Little was pleased with the win but was not getting too carried away, "If that win had come a few weeks ago then you feel the difference win the mentality gives people.  It is a shame that it has taken so long.

"We worked hard today and I thought that the younger players did really well.

"We had to scramble a few away, early in the first half the ball dropped in our box a few times but we managed to get to them first.

"In the end we scored a good goal but could have had two. Both keepers made a magnificent save each late in the game really.

"We rode our luck a little bit in the first half, based on their balls into the box especially with us not being the biggest side today and we just lost a little bit of strength from set plays but I was pleased with everybody and thought that we got better was the game went on.

"When we made the changes that we made because the two young lads looked tired, and it was a great stage for them to get involved in and they both did very well.

"Putting Danny (Williams) in their just gave us a little bit more experience and Conall (Murtagh) is just a little bit older and stronger than the other two.

"I am pleased for them, we will see what happens, we can't get too carried away but it was nice to win and it was pleasing because they tried hard, although they made mistakes they were mistakes that perhaps you can forgive with them being so young.

"I think that we all know that at Shrewsbury when we went a goal behind you could see that a lot of people looked tired. They have had to work hard all season and I think that people might say to me 'why haven't you played the kids earlier?'

If you look at Shrewsbury, if the young lads have had a couple of months of losing game after game then it can even slow their careers down.

"Today was the right time because we had nothing to lose and we were at home.

"You look at Matty Done today, and he was really good. My challenge to him would be to try and do that away from home, to be able to produce that away from home.

"It was easy to pick the team today based on us being at home and I probably will go similar on Tuesday but that is a different kind of test for them, a completely different test.

"They have got to learn and we have got to the point where we have got to try and teach them quickly.

"Whatever we did today was right after Sunday, nobody really deserved to be left out and alternatively nobody really deserved to be in, it was one of them.

"We have all made mistakes but it was nice to see the young players come in amongst a couple of experienced lads and get a good result.

"Robbo (Neil Roberts) is a great competitor and ironically both him and Steve Evans are out of contract at the end of the season so we are not one-hundred percent in control of their destiny but that's football.

"From our point of view, we would have been quite happy to stick a bit of Vaseline on Steve [when he got his head injury early on] and get him back out there.

"I don't know if he had a stitch in it or not to be honest but it wouldn't stop him heading the ball anyway as it was just a knick and you have to get on with things like that.

"He has done well today, Jason (Lee) has been around a while, he is a real hard player to play against, but I thought we handled him really well.

"We will try again at Hereford; it is a completely different ball game for them on Tuesday night, away from home against a side that are third from top so it is a completely different test for us.

"We will change some things but we won't change everything. Matty Done has a little bit of a thigh problem and we probably could have taken him off earlier but he said he was all right but in the end I thought that we just had to.

"We will have to look at that very closely but outside of that everybody else is okay.

"It is a good result and a very encouraging day based on what we have had to go through this week.

"We haven't given up.

"All week, people have been asking me if I am planning for next season, and what about this, that and the other, if I am looking at other games in the other division, which we are because we have to be as prepared as we possibly can be.

"All we have ever done is try to win football matches and sometimes we have let ourselves down mostly by mistakes but we will just keep trying and see what happens.

"I said to that young lads today to get out and play, if you make mistakes we will try to help you, look at the opposition and learn, and you have learn how to win matches because that is the most important thing.

"They are all good passers of the ball and they all like to play here, there and everywhere, but there is another side of the game and that is learning how to win.

"That will do them a lot of good."
