Brian: It Has To Be A Massive Turnaround
The season at the Racecourse came to a dismal end, as Accrington Stanley ran out comfortable 3-1 victors after an own goal by the unfortunate Shaun Pejic had given them an early advantage.
A late Neil Roberts penalty after Wes Baynes had been fouled was scant consolation for the crowd of 3,657 who turned up to witness our final game in the Football League for at least twelve months.
Reds boss Brian Little tried to sum up the day and look ahead to the future: "We wanted to try and finish the season at home better than that obviously.
"We haven't lost too many games at home this year so it is disappointing really.
"The mistakes again really set it off; the young keeper made a mistake and really from there on in it got really difficult.
"We tried to encourage them at half-time to be brave and just get out there.
"It was a great learning day for them.
"In football it was a massive day in terms of 'if you are a football player and you are in a team and you are losing 2-0 this is what it is all about'. Are you big enough? Are you strong enough?
"We just encouraged them to try and stand there, and get onto each other and try and play instead of going into their shell
"We had a couple of half chances at 0-2 which might have seen us put them under a bit of pressure and then the third goal again was another mistake.
"We have done three mistakes we feel, the first one was a poor mistake, for the second one two people were tackling on the sideline where you don't need to tackle, you can just let them have the ball, and the third one we tried to play offside when we have not done an offside session ever.
"In the last two games, young Neil tried to play offside at Hereford and Gareth tried to do the same today but we have never, ever tried to play offside in a training session.
"Just three mistakes again and the game was poor based on that.
"It was hard for the young lads, it is not their fault that we are relegated but what they are doing is learning a side to football which is there. If they can come though it then fine but we can't change anything else.
"We have got lots of things to do and our focus is very much on next season.
"I am disappointed that we couldn't get a result at home today.
"We will grind on for next Saturday as I said, but we are very much fully into preparing for next season.
"I think yesterday was very much an insight into next season; we released nine players, put another five on the transfer, we have at least eight other players who are out of contact and obviously we are targeting people for next season.
"We still do have sixteen players under contract but five of those have already been put on the transfer list it has to be said, but as I've said all along I can't make August come tomorrow. I can't do that. All I am asking is for people to give me a chance to let August come, I've got an awful lot of work to do and I think that shows it.
"I can understand the fans frustrations completely, that was a hard game for us to watch.
"We are just asking for the young lads to show us little glimpses of something that they might be able to hang onto, and help them with. Some of them failed that test today it has to be said.
"We have got more work to do next week and we have got more work to do in the summer.
"I can't ever remember having a period like this but I went to Darlington who were in a similar situation.
"We do have to do an awful lot of work behind the scenes and we are doing it.
"We can't do anymore than we did yesterday when we announced that effectively 14 players have been told that they could leave the club.
"There is a chance that next week more players will be told that they can leave the club.
"We will have a budget that is equivalent to most people, if not better that most people, in the Conference but we are not going to run out and spend loads and loads of money.
"We are going to be in a position where we are going to be competitive in the division; I think that is almost a certainty.
"A lot of people, once the dust has settled, we hope to be able to attract a lot people to the club who want to be part of a club who are bouncing back.
"That's our story and we are sticking to it because that it what we want to do.
"Not so much on Tuesday night but today was a major disappointment to us. I feel sorry for one or two of the young lads, especially young Michael in goal because it's a bit of a rick. He's called for the ball, Pej has left it and it's hit either his back or his heel and it's gone it. It shocked him and it took him a little bit of time to get over that.
"They are here to learn and this is the hardest place to learn.
"Today is not next season's team; there is no way that this is next season's team.
"I have already said, and I've announced it quite publically that having watched Conference games in the last few weeks that we know that there are a lot of better teams than us in the Conference.
"Rest assured we know that there is a lot of work to do but I can't make the season end tomorrow.
"I genuinely think that I and my staff are the right people to do it because we know the place inside out now.
"I think that I am already showing people that I won't sit on ceremony, I've got nothing else to do other than to try and rebuild this team, and I want to rebuild the team.
"The club is in good hands and I think the fans of this club deserve a side that wins football matches but they haven't had it for a long time now.
"That is my aim but if anyone is going to judge me on today then I have to accept that.
"We are putting young lads in to see if they are good enough and to get experience in a situation which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
"That is not the team that will play for us next season that is a certainty.
"After three years of losing football matches when you lose a goal you can see people visibly drain.
"That is a human thing but we said to the young players at half-time that people are looking at you and know that you are drained.
"You have got to show people that you are strong enough and physically show people that you are rolling your sleeves up and having a go. If you can do that, people will appreciate it, people will know that you are trying and proving to the manager that you are not going to bottle certain situations.
"It is not their fault but this club has lost games for two or three years now and most of these players have been part of that. It is pretty difficult thing to sort out until the pre-season but as I've said it is a certainty that that team will not be our team next season.
"All three goals were mistakes again, and at 2-0 Chris had a really good chance to get us to 2-1 which again knowing football if you get back to 2-1 as the home side then you often gets something out of the game.
"It didn't happen and we made that fatal mistake and went 3-0 down.
"We will do everything that we possibly can to be good enough next season and that will not be our team for next season, we have already let 14 go so it is a massive turnaround but it has got to be a massive turnaround."
