IT was a naturally delight Dean Saunders who emerged into the freezing night's air at Broadhall Way to give his thoughts on the day's win over the hosts:

"We fought really hard today and we got the win.

"It was nowhere near as well as we played last week, but give credit to Stevenage, they fought hard.

"We didn't get many balls into the front men today and hardly created a chance in the first half. I had to have a pop at them at the interval and things around.

"We just had to stay in the game at that stage and we certainly didn't commit suicide today. Nothing silly happened, we marked at corners and everyone marked at set pieces.

"Marc Williams was at the front post for corners, got his head on most things that came in there and we stayed in the game.

"The strikers were average in the first half, but they have come through and scored two goals.

"At the other end Gavin Ward has made two great saves, but all I ask of them is effort, determination and passion - and they have given me that again today.

"We played great last week and got nothing!"

Was the boss looking forward to returning home to the Racecourse next weekend?

"Is there such a thing as an away game?

"There is another on Wednesday night at Northwich Victoria and we have to keep going forward.

"We had two new players playing today and Ryan Flynn did travel due to an injury, so it is hard to blend them in. We've only had a couple of days to get everything running like clockwork, making the runs, knowing where people will be.

"People like Marc Williams epitomised everything I want from people at this club. Forget his football, forget his passing and forget the goal he scored - he wanted to win, that was standing out and that rubs off on the others.

"Just like losing spreads, then so does winning - when you have got people out there who want to win, then the man next to him sees Marc trying and then they all want to have a go.

"It was a hard fought win for us, but I really did think that the players showed a lot of determination to get the result.

"We've got footballers in the team now and there sometimes becomes the danger that you don't compete with the more physical side of things. But then again, if they could play football and bully the opposition then they would be playing for Real Madrid.

"All players have got faults, it's my job to blend them all together and get the balance right.

"I wasn't too happy with things after just five minutes, but Marc Williams dropped back to strengthen things up.

"Neil Taylor did well when he came on in the second half and I'd better mention Mike Williams too, he read the game throughout the 90 minutes and had he not done that, then they would have been through on the keeper.

"Ashley was doing a great job alongside him, got a bit of thump at the end and I was thinking about bringing on Steve Evans to put another head in there.

"Sometimes you pull the sheet over your head and your feet are cold - I thought about bringing one of the strikers back after we took the lead for the second time, but then that might have invited them to start putting the ball on top of us, happily it worked!"
