Dean: We Responded In The Second Half

Posted on: Mon 15 Mar 2010

MANAGER Dean Saunders acknowledged his side had been second best in the opening period, but felt their showing after the break deserved a better result at Luton Town.

"In the first half they had us under pressure, but after the break we have come out and to be fair we pummelled them," he said.

"Andy Fleming has hit the underside of the crossbar and come out, if that goes in, then I think we could have gone on to win the match.

"That's if's and but's though.

"I did think we could have had a penalty, when Sakho crossed the ball and their lad's handled it.

"We needed the chances to go in, especially against a side that was one of the favourites to get promotion at the start of the season.

"At least in the second half we came out and gave it a go.

"As the first half was the most pressure that anyone has had on us since I have been at the club.

What was the difference in the second half?

"We just told the players to get to ball quicker and get closer to people.

"We seemed to refuse to do the simple pass and gave the ball away too easily - which is very frustrating.

"When the simple pass is on we were refusing it and launching the ball forward as far from our goal as possible.

"We looked a bit flat in the first have and couldn't get to the ball.

"I had put three into midfield, as the pitch was heavy and not easy to play on. It was to win the ball and get it to our front three.

"As it was, they were getting to the ball first, moving it to their wide men, who were getting at our full backs.

"So I changed it near the end of the first half.and we seemed a lot better.

"I brought on Sakho and he showed a bit of class, some nice touches and kept the ball for us.

"At least we didn't go down with a wimper, we piled the pressure on at the end and sometimes you get a break to tie the game."

How has this latest result effected our chances of reaching the play-offs?

"The damage was done in the middle of the season," said the boss.

"Whaterever happens though, we have to keep looking to win games.

"The players still have plenty to prove in the final weeks of the season, as they are playing for their futures and new contracts.

"I'm going to have to change three or four players in that team, to get us rigt for next season, so the ones who want to stay here have to prove that they want to be part of it.

"The odds are stacked against us making the play-offs and you won't have a bet - even if you were allowed.

"I didn't think it would be an easy job and there about eight teams in the league that have been trying to get out for a number of years, with just the one automatic spot.

"We are all going for the same thing and the expectation levels at clubs like ours, means that half an hour into a game and you haven't scored, then the fans want to know why.

"So I have to continue building a team to get us out of here and it is going to take a bit longer than I thought.

"I have signed some players who have done better than I thought and some who haven't fit in, maybe this league doesn't suit them.

"So I have to get that right this summer and get the right personnel in, so we can look at getting 90 odd points next season, which doesn't allow you many bad performances.

"We haven't scored enough goals, which isn't due to not creating, as we have consistantly missed chances all year long.

"Andy Mangan has come in and he will get goals, now I need two or three more like him to put the chances away.

"Because we should be up in the top five, even more so with our defensive record.

"We need people with a goal instinct, which means mdfielder, wide players and a striker - I'll be looking to nick players off these other clubs.

"I'm learning something everyday, about my players, about the opposing players. As you go along you make decisions, some right, some wrong."
