Pontin's - Blackpool 4 Wrexham 0

Posted on: Sat 01 Sep 2007

COACH Joey Jones was very disappointed by this heavy reverse to Blackpool at their Fleetwood Town base, although there was the consolation of striker Juan Ugarte coming through 55 minutes unscathed.

Fleetwood's ground is called Highbury, after the road it stands beside, but after two consecutive 4-0 defeats to the Seasiders at this venue, the sooner they rename it the better!

At least we managed to finish this match with 11 men on the pitch, although defender Lee Jones did limp to the sidelines in the final minute with what looks likely to be knee ligament damage.

"With defending like this we were lucky to only lose by four," said Joey afterwards, and that was about all he could summon up to describe the previous 90 minutes.

Juan actually went close to opening the scoring after just two minutes, when his shot across the face of the home goal also saw the ball carry beyond former England U21 international Rhys Evans' far post.

Blackpool took the lead through a seventh minute penalty after Jamie Price has brought down Phil Marsh, when through on the keeper, allowing Scott Vernon to fire home from 12 yards.

While Ugarte, Josh Johnson and Mike Carvill all went close with efforts, the Reds never really recovered from this set back and just before the interval the Seasiders finally sewed the result up.

The Wrexham defence had several chances to clear the ball as it bobbled around the edge of their box and only a full length save from keeper Chris Maxwell denied Marsh, but the ball dropped nicely for Scott Vernon to fire in a second on 42 minutes.

After the break the experienced Adrian Forbes had an effort cleared off the Wrexham line by Jones before substitute Danny Mitcheley grabbed their three following a corner, with a smart turn outside the box and a shot that ended up in the corner of Maxwell's net on 67 minutes.

It took until the 85th minute before Evans was finally called upon to make a save, denying Carvill's shot on the run at the near post.

Following Lee Jones' departure, Adrian Forbes wrapped up the scoring when a powerful run on the right by Mitcheley saw the ball collected by the winger, who's thundering shot was met by the head of Johnny Hunt on the goal line, but still ended up in the top corner.
