A quite amazing evening at the Globe finished with the visitors taking the spoils, although Joey Jones will be very disappointed that his side wasted numerous opportunities in the first half to have run up a rugby score, then were made to pay after the interval.

In the opening 15 minutes alone, Jamie Reed, Marc Willaims and Mike Carvill were guilty of wasting chance after chance. The Morecambe defence were all at sea as wave after wave of Wrexham attacks just pinned them back in their own half.

There was then an injury to Reed, as the striker went over on his ankle and had to be substituted before heading to hospital for an x-ray.

Eventually the deadlock was broken on 36 minutes, but in a strange fashion. Keeper Shaun Jalal blocked Carvill's effort, but even at the ball ran loose between two defenders there seemed little danger, until panic set in as Marc Williams appeared on the scene and between them they managed to strike the ball off it each other and into the net!

Seven minutes later and Shaun Pejic saw his header from a corner blocked on the line. As the ball popped up the keeper grabbed at but rolled backwards over the goal line for what appeared to be an own goal, although Mike Carvill was claiming it.

Wrexham werre deservedly in front, but they let their guard down a minute later and Jon Newby's right wing cross was converted at the back post by the unmarked Aaron Taylor.

At the interval, coach Joey Jones warned his players that those missed chances could come back to haunt them and that's exactly what happened.

Some poor defending allowed Morecambe to break through on 62 minutes, when Jon Newby had men over in the middle, but chose to shoot and saw his defekcted effort sail over the stranded Chris Maxwell.

Two minutes level and the Shrimps were in front when Danny Williams upended Taylor on the edge of the box and up stepped Paul Lloyd to send Maxwell the wrong way from 12-yards.

It was then Wrexham who were floundering and Morecambe were cutting through them at will.

Alex Darlington made his first appearance of the season when replacing Mark Jones with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Yet on 75 minutes it was 4-2 to the visitors when the Reds gave the ball away on the edge of their own box and Paul Lloyd fired a low shot into the back of the net.

It all seemed beyond the home side two minutes later when Newby set up Aaron Taylor for his second goal of the night.

To be fair to Wrexham they pushed all the way to the final whistle and a superb solo run by Wes Baynes ended with the defender firing in a 20-yard effort after running from his own half of the pitch in the 87th minute.

Then into added time, man of the match Mike Carvill crossed from the left for Josh Johnson to steal in at the back post and finish from close range - but it was just a little too late.

"Shocking" was how Joey summed it up.

"We really could have scored six in the first half, but in the second there was some dreadful defending and we paid a heavy price."
