GOALS from Silvio Spann and Michael Proctor in the opening 45 minutes gave Wrexham a commanding lead at the interval and despite an improved showing by the visitors in the second period, they only had a Paul Smith volley to take away as a consolation in this latest mini-derby meeting at Buckley.
It might not have had the passion of the other derby this evening up in Glasgow, but those Wrexham fans heading home after the final whistle will be happy that at least in this dark days, they enjoyed some small slice of success as the Reds overcame the Blues 2-1, which stretched our winning run in the Pontin's League to four wins.
Morecambe's win over Chester on Monday and then a 1-0 success over Burnley this evening, means the Shrimps are champions, but with two games left we are currently in second place and can secure that runners-up spot with a double-header against Manchester City to come next week.
After a couple of efforts from Alex darlington had been blocked and Josh Johnson put his one-on-one effort wide of the far post, up stepped Silvio Spann to make the break through on 24 minutes.
Michael Proctor was fouled just outside the box and with three Wrexham players poised over the ball, the Trinidadian curled another lovely set piece effort over the wall and inside a post. City keeper Phil Palethorpe got his finger tips to the ball, but couldn't prevent it from findind the back of the net.
Eight minutes late Spann turned provider for Michael Proctor, when he hit a ball through middle for the striker to chase. Despite the close attentions of two defenders, the former Sunderland man was able to chip the advancing keeper and then watch on as the ball rolled over the line for our second of the night.
City responded after the break and after going close on one occasion before midfielder Paul Smith gleefully hammered home a half cleared effort from well outside the box on 51 minutes.
The visitors enjoyed the better of the chances thereafter and passed up one great opportunity when the ball crossed the face of the goal, leaving Ryan Williams with a clear view of the target, but his effort was blocked at the last moment.
Richard Hope had the ball in the net with a header from a corner, but it was ruled out for offside, as the Reds failed to make some promising situations count.
Coach Joey Jones though was typically honest in his summing up of the game.
"We were the better team in the first hour, but they came back in the second half and I thought were the better side," he said.
"That is disappointing in itself, because of the line-up we were able to field.
"I told the players exactly that after the game, we should have done better with the players we had available.
"Michael Proctor, Alex Darlington and Chris Marriott did well, while Anthony Williams didn't have much to do, but that was able it."
