totesport.com - Preston 0 Wrexham 1

Posted on: Thu 11 Feb 2010

ON a day when the Dragons moved top of the totesport.com league - west with this great 1-0 victory over Championship side Preston North End, they did it courtesy of a great individual strike from Mark Jones and with only 10-men for most of the second half.

The Wales international (right) turned on the skill after 39 minutes, when he skipped round the challenge of three white-shirted defenders before sliding his shot out of the reach of keeper Wayne Henderson.

Matty Wolfenden was unlucky to have his effort ruled out for offside, which did seem marginal, as he prodded the ball passed the advancing Henderson a few minutes earller.

The game had sprung into life on the half hour mark, after a cagey opening 30 minutes when the two teams sparred with each other.

Preston forward Steve Elliott tested Chris Maxwell with a stinging shot which seemed destined for the top of the net, before the Wales U21 keeper tipped the ball over for a corner.

Maxi was back in action to produce diving saves to deny first Elliott and then full back Eddie Nolan, before somehow palming Darren Carter's goal bound shot right on half time.

It was not all one way traffic though, as both Adrian Cieslewicz and Obi Anoruo saw efforts flash just win of the North End goal.

After the interval the game changed with a double booking for Frenchman Hedi Taboubi on 55 minutes.

The midielder felt aggrieved not to have been awarded a free kick on the halfway line and his protests brough him a first yellow.

Soon back on his feet, Hedi let his frustrations get the better of him with a rash tackle from behind on Liam Chilvers and the inevitable lonely walk to the dressing rooms followed.

Dean Saunders quickly sent on Christian Smith to tighten up midfield, as North End raised the tempo and pushed extra bodies forward in search of an equaliser.

Keith Tracey came closest to scoring for Preston, when he got on the end of an Adam Barton cross but could only hit the outside of a post after 76 minutes.

Despite their best efforts the leveller never arrived, although how Danny Mayor actually managed to miss from just six-yards out, deep into added on time, was something of a mystery.

It was though a worthy win for the Reds and with Rochdale's home game against Blackpool being called off due to a frozen pitch, one which sent us to the top of the table.
