A 30-yard Levi Mackin shot with nine minutes left, which took a noticeable deflection, was not enough to prevent our reserve side from losing 4-1 to Manchester United in the first Pontin's League game of the new season, before a healthy crowd of 341 at the Racecourse.

Unfortunately, our hard-working visitors were already 3-0 up at this stage. Their first was a free header from Paul McShane following a Markus Neumayr corner on eight minutes and the second, which arrived nine minutes after the half-time interval, was netted by Ben Collett from a tight angle when the youngster beat Shaun Pejic before guiding his shot across Matt Baker into the far corner.

The ever-dangerous David Poole added a brace for a young Red Devils side either side of Mackin's effort. His first, on 71 minutes, came from a long punt from Lee Lawrence down the left-hand side and Poole beat Pejic before shooting home past Baker. The same player added the final goal of the evening and came from another Neumayr cross which gave the striker time to prod home a low shot.

The scoreline was probably a little harsh on a spirited Red Dragons side which contained trialists Matthew Shaw from Sheffield Wednesday and Griff Jones, formerly of Barnsley, the latter particularly impressing during his 45 minutes of action.
