After a night and morning of continual rain this afternoon's Pontin's League match was in serious doubt, but finally got the go ahead after an inspection by the match officials.
There was an explosive start on just six minutes when Jason Taylor put the visitors in front with a free header from a dead ball, burying the ball from about 10-yards out.
New Spanish trialist Juan Ugarte was quickly on target when he connected with Simon Spender's cross from the right wing, his flick header on beating Latics keeper Bertrund Bossu at the far post jusyt three minutes later.
The former Real Sociedad frontman was unlucky not to convert a great through pass from Levi Mackin, when
Chris Hall was on target twice for the visitors, as the young Wrexham back line were unable to deal with his electrifying pace!
Twice he was able to lose marker Garteh Evans and on both occasions the ball ended up in the back of the Wrexham net.
How Oldham didn't increase their lead before the break was someting of a mystery, although keeper Danny Evans did pull off four superb saves, as well as thanking the woodwork to deny the every dangerous Hall.
A half time talk from Joey Jones, together with the introduction of Matty Done for Matty Crowell, who had played at Colchester the night before, lifted the young Reds and within five minutes they had pulled one back.
A corner flicked on by Craig Morgan and Mark Jones struck a well taken half volley from the edge of the area.
Centre back Gareth Evans limped off a few minutes later to be replaced by Liam Jones.
Kieran Quinn was only inches away from finding a leveller after 70 minutes, when a Done corner was only cleared to the edge of the Oldham box and the midfielder's first time volley was somehow tipped onto the crossbar by Bossu.
Matty Shaw, who made his first team debut less than 24 hours earlier, benefitted from a surging Jones run through the centre, as he laid a pass to the left and the ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker forced Bossu into a diving save with his angled drive.
Oldham wrapped up the result on 86 minutes when sub Chris Bagnall forced Danny Evans into a tremedous one-handed save, before the ball dropped loose inside the six-yard box and Ashley Winn bundled it home off a post.
Not that the Reds were out of the game even then, as first Done blazed wide when set up by Jamie Reed, then Reed's close range header from a free kick was superbly turned away by Bossu.
