Goals -
0-1Marc Williams (5)
1-1Danny Boshell (15)
2-1Chris Hall (70)
3-1Jason Taylor (83)
Another defeat for the second string, who gave up an early lead to crash 3-1 at Boundary Park.
Young Marc Williams capitalised on a defensive error after just five minutes and with only the goalkeeper to beat he fired a low shot underneath the veteran Steve Mildenhall from 15-yards.
Latics replied via midfielder Ashley Winn minutes later, with the midfielder watching his dipping shot from 25-yards just clear the Wrexham crossbar.
Chris Taylor then missed a great opportunity to draw his team level on 11 minutes, when forward Chris Hall nodded back to him on the penalty spot. But with time to pick his sport the full back blazed his effort well off target.
The equaliser wasn't going to be far away though, as Oldham kept up the pressure and on 15 minutes it duly arrived
A cross from the right wing reached Hall on the edge of the Wrexham box, but with two defenders marking him, he spotted Danny Boshell free to his left and slipped a pass through to the midfielder, who with an uninterrupted sight of Michael Jones' goal fired a fierce shot into the corner of the net.
Strangely enough, with this goal, the pressure exerted by Oldham eased up and the Reds were allowed to come more into the game. This saw the next chance falling to Hector Sam on 24 minutes, when he a Dean Bennett cross from the right flank was struck goalwards by the Trinidadian striker but Mildenhall was well placed to make a comfortable save.
Shortly afterwards Sam went tumbling in the box, after taking a pass from Scott Green on the run, but with the visiting players all appealing for a spot kick, referee Mr. Haywood was happy to waved play on.
A cross from Alex Smith aimed for the leaping Bennett proved to be just too high as the two wing back combined to get round the back of the Oldham defence.
On 35 minutes, Matt Crowell's 30-yard only succeeded in hitting Sam on the edge of the Oldham box, but the striker took the ball on a pace before despatching his effort past Mildenhall. Unfortunately, the assistant referee thought Hector was in an offside position!
Carrots was called on to make a smart save on 39 minutes, when the ball once again fell to Boshell 18-yards out, this time the midfielder was unable to repeat his scoring feat of earlier in the match and the young Wrexham custodian was equal to the shot.
A quiet opening to the second half saw the game's first booking when scorer Boshell was yellow carded for catching Marc Williams' ankles. Then in the wisdom of the football lawmakers, the striker had to go to the side of the pitch as the free kick was taken and we were a man short in attack!
It was 21 minutes after the restart before either keeper had a save to make, then it was Carrots' turn to deal withy a speculative effort from full back Chris Taylor. The youngster pushing the ball round the post to conceded a corner.
Following a double substation by Wrexham, we allowed the home side to take the lead with the next attack on 71 minutes.
Shaun Pejic, playing on the left side of defence, was trying his best not to concede a penalty, when his tackle just rebounded off substitute Matty Wolfenden and fell into the path of Chris Hall, who from six-yards was free to stab the ball past a stranded Jones.
Oldham took fresh heart from this goal and on 83 minutes they wrapped up the victory with a third goal when Jason Taylor side footed an effort from the edge of the box and it beat Carrots coming off the inside of his left hand post and running back along the goal line before just creeping side the other post!
The experienced Matt Appleby, standing on the halfway line, split the Wrexham defence with a dolly ball lifted over our back four, which allowed Wolfenden to strip clear before firing high from 18-yards.
Moments later Jones made a great close range save to deny Hall and then as the ball bounced loose three blue shirts somehow failed to force it over the goal line.
After a promising start, we lost our way in the second half, rarely threatening the Oldham goal when kicking up the BoundaryPark slope.
