Pontin's - Tranmere 4 Wrexham 2
A cool night in Birkenhead saw a strong Red Dragons line-up face high-flying Tranmere before a decent crowd at Prenton Park. With Michael Jones suspended following his sending off against Chester recently, Chris Mullock was given his chance in goal. Lee Roche, Simon Spender, Matty Crowell, Levi Mackin and Robbie Foy were all named in Joey Jones' starting XI but unfortunately, former Wrexham loanee Paul Linwood was not called upon for Tranmere.
The games commenced with Wrexham defending the Cowshed End of Prenton Park, where the visiting supporters have been situated on our recent visits.
With just seven minutes on the clock, a back-heel from former Newcastle player Calvin Zola allowed Chris Dagnall to rifle home a curling effort from 20 yards which gave goalkeeper Chris Mullock no chance and put the home side a goal to the good.
Less than a minute later and it was 2-0 up when Gareth Evans was caught napping just seconds after the Reds had kicked-off, and he was robbed by Rovers winger Steve Davies. When he laid the ball back, Calvin Zola matched Dagnall's excellent strike to blast home with the Red Dragons keeper once again helpless.
Wrexham needed time to re-organise, and were allowed a couple of minutes knocking the ball around without ever really threatening the Rovers rearguard which Michael Johnson was marshalling well.
Davies again caused panic in the Reds defence when indecision between Mullock and Spender nearly allowed the winger in, but the keeper snatched the ball away at the feet of the attacker, although Spends appeared to be a little winded afterwards, and soon after the ever-willing Zola saw a powerfully hit 25-yarder fly harmlessly wide.
On 28 minutes, Foy, playing in an unfamiliar wide role, attempted to chip the vastly experienced home keeper Steve Wilson from the edge of the area, following a perceptive Matty Done pass, but did not strike the ball property and it ended as a comfortable save for the custodian.
With 8 minutes remaining of the half, Zola stretched his legs and used his tremendous pace to fly past the Red Defence, but Mike Williams did well to knock the ball into the Cowshed to concede a corner kick which came to nothing.
Just a minute later, a good run down the left by Done saw him lay the ball off for Foy whose attempted shot from 25-yards ended up falling nicely for Jamie Reed. The striker reduced the arrears with a well struck effort which gave Wilson no chance. Game on!!
On 41 minutes we were back level in dramatic fashion. Foy got the ball in midfield and passed out to Reed, who in turn fed Done out wide. The winger whipped in a decent ball from out wide which the Keeper failed to claim what should have been a comfortable ball, and Lee Roche was perfectly position to rifle the ball back across goal into the far bottom corner.
Ironically, the goal came as we were down to ten men as Gareth Evans spent a short time on the sideline receiving treatment.
Half-time: Tranmere Rovers 2 Wrexham 2
The teams reappeared for the second period with neither side making a substitution.
The Wrexham strike duo of Marc Williams and Reed were forming a decent partnership, with Foy not surprisingly getting forward at every opportunity. and we were giving Tranmere problems at the back.
Marc Williams caused problems for the Rovers defence when he got on the end of a low cross-field pass from Roche but his shot was straight at the keeper.
The referee produced the first yellow card of the evening for Rovers skipper Dagnall on 59 minutes for a lunge in the centre of the field and I don't think even the most ardent home supporter could argue with the decision.
Soon after the home side made a change with Zola removed from the action to be replaced by Adam Dickinson, in a straight swap which saw the sub take over in the attack. Wrexham also made a change on 63 minutes with Graham Roche replacing Spender.
Marc Williams again tried an ambitious effort which failed to trouble Wilson and the same player just failed to beat Johnson when he would then have been clear on goal, albeit some 40 yards out.
The vision of Done set Reed away down the left but as he cut in he did not have any support and after doing well to hold the ball up he failed to pick out on the in-rushing Wrexham players and unfortunately, the chance was gone
Joey now decided to go for broke introducing Chris Evans and Phil Gray in a double substitution which saw Foy and Mackin removed from play on 67 minutes, as an already extremely young side got even younger.
From a free-kick conceded by Evans, the home side played the ball around nicely until Dickinson got to the byline and delivered a telling cross into the area, but luckily this flew over the heads of everybody in the area and just moments later Dagnall blasted an effort well over in the Kop Stand behind Wilson's goal.
The Red Dragons continued to push forward when the opportunity arose and Reed hit a spectacular volley after Evans had put in a perceptive ball in from the right-hand side of the area.
The home side restored their advantage on 76 minutes when full-back James Vaughan won the ball virtually on the halfway line and fed Steve Davies on the opposite wing, the Rovers wideman strode on and hit an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net, which once again gave Mullock no chance.
Within seconds, Reed had an appeal for a penalty turned down by the referee who indicated that in his opinion the home player had won the ball cleanly.
Dagnall had a couple of long range efforts for Rovers as the home side looked the most likely to add to the goal tally, but a dangerous looking break by Evans for Wrexham ended with him being unceremoniously fouled by Chris Tremarco.
Evans and Reed linked up well again and from the ball in Done had a sight of goal before a defender swooped to block the effort at the expense of a corner.
With 87 minutes played, Tranmere regained their two goal advantage when Graham Roche was beaten down on our right and the well struck, drilled cross saw Chris Dagnall power home from about eight yards. Despite conceding four goals, Mullock hardly put a foot, or indeed a glove, wrong all night and should be pleased with his contribution against a dangerous attack-minded side.
With the clock already on 90 minutes, Lee Roche picked up a booking while Rovers choose to use their remaining two subs with Danny Holmes and Craig Curran introduced in place of Michael Jones and Oliver James respectively.
Reed scuffed the last chance of the evening from the left side of the box as the ball went harmlessly out of play without troubling Wilson before the referee brought proceedings to an end after three minutes of time added on.
