Pontin's Cup - Wrexham 1 Rochdale 1
Goals -
1-0 Foy (51)
1-1 Greenwood (86)
A point a piece, as the Reserves concede a late equaliser at Globe Way for the third time in their three games played at Buckley Town.
Mind you, the main talking points will be the dismissals of Shaun Pejic on 70 minutes and ten Jim Whitley two minutes into time added on, both for denying goalscoring opportunities.
Happily, neither player will miss first team games after seeing red, but the pair will have to sit out our Pontin's Cup visit to Bradford City in 14 days time.
The game got off to a good start, as Simon Spender crashed an angled drive onto the crossbar after just two minutes and then Jamie Reed also saw an effort pushed onto the woodwork by the Dale keeper Danny Woodall.
In between, the visitors really should have scored when captain Kevin Gibbins headed just wide of the back post from a deadball.
Then on 35 minutes, Mike Wiliams was suckered into conceding a penalty, when tripping up Ben Kitchen inside the area. Gibbins stepeed yup to take the kick, but was denied by a spectacular save from young Chris Mullock in the Wrexham goal.
The keeper had only just returned from a holiday in Florida on Monday and was still a little jet lagged, but he got down well to his left and lifted the ball over his crossbar.
Six minutes in to the second half and a free kick to the Reds was successfully converted by on loan Liverpool striker Robbie Foy. From 20-yards, his effort took a slight deflection off the end of the wall and ended up in the corner of the Rochdale net.
Reed saw another shot strike an upright minutes later.
It was the pace of striker Clive Moyomodibe which uset the Wrexham defence on 70 minutes and when Pej bumped the forward off the ball it looked no more than a free kick, but referee Mr R Lewis decided it was a last man offence and produced a straight red card.
Wrexham were coping well with being reduced to 10-men, with both Reed and Foy finding space behidn the Dale defence, while Simon Spender's late runs also produced promising opportunities.
Then with four minutes left onthe clock, Kitchen escaped his marker and crossed deep to the back post where Denis Greenwood was free to convert for the equailser.
The disappointment of once again letting a lead slip at this level, was compounded when Jim Whitley appeared to push Moyomodibe on the edge of the box and this resulted in another red card.
Apart from this, all the returning players got through the game in good shape and Paul Warhurst might even be in line for a return to first team action at the weekend - weather permitting.
