A goal at either end of the game ensured a draw with The Dragons taking the lead with a goal from Nick Rushton after just 97 seconds but Chester drew level with just 45 seconds left of the regulation 90 minutes.
It was striker Rushton who fired us in front with a great drive that flew across CIty goalkeeper Joshua O'Connell and into the the far corner of his net after the forward had got behind the visitors defence to latch onto a long punt from goalkeeper Danny Ward.
In a scrappy game it was Wrexham, playing in an unfamilair 3-5-2 formation, who created the better chances in the opening half with Declan Walker curling a shot just wide of the far post and the same player seeing a volley from inside the six-yard box palmed away by the keeper.
The visitors were struggling to create anything of note and Max Penk miss-kicked when in a good position with the marauding Walker, relishing his more advanced role on the right-wing, again invlved in the build-up.
Midway through the half, it was the dangerous Rushton who showed great speed and power to get in behind the City rearguard and his cross just evaded strike partner Jordan Kane.
The Blues finally troubled the Wrexham back three from a corner on our left which saw sub Connell Rawlinson rise the highest but his header was deflected away for a second flag kick whch came to nothing, and, within seconds at the other end, Rushton flicked a shot just wide of the far post from a tight angle as The Reds went looking to double their lead.
The final chance of the half saw Ryan Davidson nudge his header just wide of the far post.
Ten minutes after the break, Rushton nearly doubled his tally for the afternoon when he thumped the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area but the visitors soon hit back and Davidson struck the woodwork at the other end with Sam Cutler failing to take advantage of the rebound and putting his effort wide of Ward's goal.
Will Roberts missed a great chance to level matters when he missed an easy chance for Chester after Max Penk had needlessly conceded a free-kick that was only half cleared and when it was played into the box the ball fell to the sub in front of goal but thanfully he steered his effort wide.
Good work from Rob Pearson and James Colbeck, who linked up well from a corner-kick, which eventually saw the ball lifted into the CIty area but the visiting defence scrambled the ball away as our strikers waited to pounce, and Davidson again made a dangerous break for CIty but Liam Shipton made a lung-busting run to track backl well to concede a corner kick as the striker shaped to shoot.
After coming on as sub, Shipton made a good break down the right and when his cross was headed clear, Ed Moss' shot from outside the penalty area drifted just wide of the far post while Scott Reid lifted an effort onto the top of Ward's net and soon after, Davidson fed the same player who cut back inside Penk but curled his chance wide of the far post.
Just when it seemed that we were going to take all three points Chester produced a hammer blow in the final minute of the 90; from a left-wing corner Rawlinson, with acres of space in an otherwide crowded penalty area, headed home powerfully from just a few yards out.
Even after this, Pearson flighted the ball into the penalty area and, under considerable pressure, it was dropped by O'Connell and the referee gave a free-kick in the ensuing melee even though there appeared not to be a foul on the City keeper.
