Experienced midfielder Penn signed for Wrexham in January 2017 and has been a favourite of the fans since.

Russell began life in the youth team at Birmingham City aged 15 before signing youth forms with Kidderminster Harriers and Scunthorpe United.

Eventually it was with Scunthorpe that he signed professional terms with at 17. He would never feature for the first-team and in 2005 switched back to Kidderminster Harriers as a pro, having made just one appearance for the youth team at Aggborough.

His senior debut, now aged 19 came in the Midland Football Alliance shortly after joining Harriers, who loaned him out to Alvechurch.

His professional debut came in November 2005 in a 0-0 draw against York City, Penn picked up a yellow card on each of his first three appearances.

His first goal came against Bradford City in the Football League Trophy. With Harriers he was selected eight times for the England C team scoring once, he was named England C Player of the Year in 2009.

After 177 appearances Penn moved on to Burton Albion in the Football League for two seasons before heading to Cheltenham Town where he made over a century of appearances, leaving in January 2014 for league rivals York City.

With York he made exactly 100 league appearances scoring five times but was relegated with the Minstermen at the end of the 2015/2016 season.

He went on to join Carlisle United making just two appearances in all competitions, joining Gateshead on loan from the end of October until Boxing Day.
