MATCH REPORT | Tamworth 0-5 Wrexham

Reds continue pre-season with a rout at the Lamb Ground.

31 July 2021

Phil Parkinson's Wrexham side treated fans to a five-goal thumping of Tamworth this afternoon with supporters able to watch Wrexham for the first time since March 2020.

With supporters locked out of grounds for well over a year, fans clamoured to get down to the Lamb Ground in order to see their side in action. They wouldn't be disappointed.

It took just 22 seconds for them to see a Wrexham goal, as Tyler French turned home a cross to give his side the lead. Jordan Ponticelli doubled the advantage after 15 minutes.

A trio of second half goals via a Dior Angus brace and trialist finish saw off the Lambs in front of a crowd of 1,193.

Taking the lead via French on 22 seconds was the perfect start following a cross from Paul Mullin, and the Red Dragons didn't take their foot off the gas. New signing Mullin looked bright from the off, creating chance after chance and winning set-pieces in dangerous areas.

On 15 minutes they doubled the lead with Ponticlli's glancing header from Mullin's cross finding the bottom right corner.

Seconds after providing the assit, Mullin almost made it three when he cut inside from the right and crashed the ball off the crossbar. He went on to test the goalkeeper a number of times but was unable to get the better of him in the first period. Wrexham goalkeeper Rob Lainton on the other hand didn't have a save to make.

At half-time Mullin was replaced by Angus who made an immediate impact, tapping home an effort after just a couple of minutes. Angus was lively during the second 45, with the striker unleashed down the right on 55 minutes, cutting inside and getting a shot off that was blocked, before Ponticelli's follow up only found the goalkeeper.

With 20 minutes to play Angus recieved the ball with his back to goal inside the box, he hit it on the turn against the underside of the bar before a trialist tapped home.

On 81 minutes Wrexham made it five, Max Cleworth made a sensational run down the right with clever play and skill to beat several defenders before putting it on a plate for Angus to nip home.
