So it's come to this. There was an inevitable sense, when the season's fixtures were released, that a final home game against Stockport County would be decisive. Now the time has arrived, and the stakes couldn't be higher.

The permutations for the rest of the season seem complex, but can be boiled down to a few basics. Victory for Wrexham means we'll have a chance of winning the title at Dagenham on the final day of the season, regardless of how Stockport do in midweek when they play their game in hand at home to Torquay; a draw means Stockport will have two home games left to clinch the point which will earn them the title; defeat means the unthinkable - County's travelling army get to celebrate the title at The Racecourse.

Wrexham's barnstorming second half of the season made this dramatic conclusion possible. While Stockport were breaking club records on a remarkable winning run, Wrexham did likewise. 

From December to April, County embarked on an incredible run of 21 matches unbeaten, with a home draw against Chesterfield the only time they dropped points. However, that sequence ended dramatically at The Racecourse in the FA Trophy semi-final, and Wrexham have gone on to claw 5 points back from The Hatters since then, losing just one game in 19. A late penalty at Boreham Wood on Monday denied the Red Dragons the chance to go into the last week of the season with a points advantage by winning today.

Once again, The Racecourse will be a sell-out, and Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson tld The Leader he's keen to take advantage of the special relationship which has built up between his team and the fans.

"Come and play your part like you have done all season.

The Racecourse has got to be a difficult place for the opposition team to play and that is a two-fold thing with the manner of the way we play and the way the supporters create an intensity in the atmosphere.

We have got to get those two in-sync together on Sunday and make it really tough for Stockport.

We have enjoyed the atmosphere at The Racecourse, it is the last home game and we are looking forward to finishing the league season off with a really good performance against our rivals.

I think there has been a good connection which has built up throughout the season between the supporters, the club and the players.

That is down to several factors. Obviously the ownership has brought new life into the football club, and the supporters have really identified with the honesty, commitment and work of the players.

That is the mantra we want to stick to and keep because we know our supporters will get right behind us if they continue to see the effort the lads are putting in. "They understand what we are trying to achieve, how we play, and I am looking forward to seeing every supporter get right behind the team and give it everything they have got to send us into the last game of the season in good spirits.

A spectacular clash in the semi-finals of the FA Trophy saw Paul Mullin score two magnificent goals in added time to steer Wrexham through to Wembley.

HEAD TO HEAD

This season's FA Trophy match bucked the recent trend in this fixture, as Stockport having enjoyed popping over the border in the last couple of seasons.

They equalled their best margin of victory at The Racecourse last April with a spectacular 3-0 win which was particularly unusual because all the goals were scored by ex-Wrexham players: Alex Reid got two and John Rooney scored the other from the spot.

The previous season they also won at The Racecourse, taking a 2-0 lead into the break which Wrexham couldn’t make inroads into until it was too late, with Leighton McIntosh coming off the bench to score his only league goal for us from a tight angle.

Ironically, those back-to-back wins for Stockport directly follow our biggest win over The Hatters. In January 2015 we clashed in an FA Trophy replay and won 6-1, with Wes York and Louis Moult each scoring two and Andy Bishop and Steve Tomassen getting the others.

Our two most recent league wins were also emphatic. Joe Clarke, Danny Wright and Rob Ogleby scored in a 3-1 win in February 2013, and the season before we walloped Dietmar Hamann’s side 4-0, with Nat Knight-Percival scoring two and Andy Morrell and Jake Speight chipping in.
