REPORT | Llanfair United Ladies 1-6 Wrexham AFC Women

Rosie Hughes scores five goals as Wrexham book their place in main draw

19 September 2021

Rosie Hughes scored five times as Wrexham AFC Women bounced back to winning ways to progress to the FAW Welsh Women’s Cup first round with a dominant win away to Llanfair United.

Hughes struck a first-half hat-trick and then, after Lauren Reese added to the lead and Gemma Jones pulled a goal back, Hughes scored twice more to seal a dominant victory.

The qualifying round draw pitted the two Genero Adran North League teams together, but Wrexham ensured they booked their place in the main draw with a dominant away win.

Manager Mari Edwards made three defensive changes that defeat to Pwllheli – Katie Sharp and Jodie Davis making their first competitive starts of the season, while Del Morgan returned in goal.

Hughes gave Wrexham the lead after just a minute, however – scoring her fifth competitive goal of the season to break the deadlock.

The striker doubled her own and Wrexham’s tally on 34 minutes, and just six minutes later she was celebrating a third hat-trick in four Wrexham appearances when she beat the keeper for a third time.

The second-half was more settled, but Reese stretched Wrexham’s advantage on 69 minutes – firing in her first competitive goal of the season.

Gemma Jones pulled a goal back for the hosts on 75 minutes, but Hughes snuffed out any slim hope of an unlikely comeback.

She added a fourth in the 81st minute, and four minutes later was celebrating her fifth of the afternoon as she bettered her own previous best tally in a Wrexham shirt to seal victory.

Wrexham: Morgan, Davis, Lovett (Owens 66), Sharp, Rintoul, Dickens, Dutton, Pritchard (Lightfoot 70), Reese, Mackenzie (Glendenning 56), Hughes
