MATCH REPORT | CPD Y Rhyl 1879 1-2 Wrexham AFC Women

Stoppage-time penalty seals place in next round

17 October 2022

Lili Jones kept her nerve to slam home a stoppage-time penalty and book Wrexham AFC Women’s place in the next round of the Genero Adran Trophy.

Jones converted in the 92nd minute, after Amber Lightfoot’s goal had earlier been cancelled out by Rachael Nattrass late on.

The victory maintains Wrexham’s 100 per cent start to the season, and moves them to six points from two games in the Trophy. With Rhyl and Llanfair due to meet in the final fixture, and both teams three points behind, Wrexham are guaranteed a top-two finish.

The Red Dragons had goalkeeper Del Morgan available again, while new signing Phoebe Davies was on the bench for the first time.

Erin Lovett missed out, however – the final game of her three-match ban for a red card in last year’s competition – and top scorer Rosie Hughes was also unavailable.

Having scored 17 goals in their previous three games, Wrexham found the going tougher against a stubborn Lilywhites team and lacked rhythm.

Lightfoot broke the deadlock on 24 minutes, however, from Mackenzie’s assist, to ensure it was the Red Dragons who led at the break.

Davies was introduced for her debut with half an hour remaining, and manager Steve Dale rotated his options from the bench throughout the second-half.

Wrexham looked like they were going to be punished for having not managed to get going in the game, however, when Nattrass levelled with just six minutes remaining.

But Jones’ stoppage-time penalty – slamming the ball high and straight down the middle of the goal – was enough to snatch victory.

Wrexham’s Adran Trophy group fixtures now end with a match against winless Llangefni Town on November 6, as the Red Dragons look to seal top spot in the group.

They return to league action next time out, however, with a match away to title rivals Llandudno Ladies.

Line-up: Morgan, Pritchard, Sharp, L.Jones, Buckley (Roberts 70), Dutton (R.Jones 82), Dickens, Mackenzie (B.Jones 70), Hodson (Davies 59), Lightfoot, Suckley (McCaffrey 82)
