Wrexham AFC Women return to action with their first home game of the 2022/23 season, as Llanfair United make the trip to Rhos Aelwyd FC on Sunday (September 25).

Steve Dale’s Red Dragons kicked off the league season with a 6-0 win at Llanfair and, after the first scheduled home league game was postponed following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, return to action against the same opposition this weekend. The Genero Adran Trophy fixture kicks off at 2pm.

Three weeks ago, Wrexham AFC Women kicked off their 2022/23 Genero Adran North campaign in style with a 6-0 win against Llanfair United at Mount Field.

Steve Dale’s side will now look to continue their impressive record against the team from Powys when the start the Genero Adran Trophy.

Last year, it was victory against Llanfair – in which Rosie Hughes scored yet another hat-trick against an opponent she has enjoyed playing in the last 12 months – that saw Wrexham into the second round of the Trophy. Genero Adran Premier giants Swansea City beat the Red Dragons to end their cup run – one of just two defeats the team has suffered since Steve Dale took permanent charge.

Team news

Lili Jones missed the match between these two teams at the start of the month due to illness, but the Wrexham AFC Women Under-19s captain returns to action this weekend.

Jones scored twice in Wrexham’s 13-0 win against Caernarfon Town Under-19s on Friday night.

Ava Suckley scored five goals in that rout, and is competing with Sophie Hodson and fit-again Amber Lightfoot for a place in the starting line-up for this match.

Erin Lovett will miss out, still suspended after her red card in the final group game of last year’s competition.

Goals galore

Rosie Hughes scored yet another hat-trick to pass 50 goals for Wrexham last time out. Against Llanfair, Hughes has scored 14 goals in five appearances – including an incredible four hat-tricks.

Ava Suckley netted twice and Libby Mackenzie was also on target last time out, with Suckley then continuing her goalscoring start to life at Wrexham with seven goals in two games for Wrexham AFC Women Under-19s.

Amber Lightfoot bolsters the attacking options, meanwhile – both her and Rebecca Pritchard scored when Wrexham last hosted Llanfair last season.

Keeping it clean

Erin Lovett’s suspension means a reshuffle will be needed at the back, as Wrexham look to keep consecutive clean sheets.

Despite Wrexham’s dominant record in this fixture, with five wins in five games since the start of last season, Llanfair had scored at least once in each of the previous four meetings until this month’s first clash.

Back in action

For Llanfair’s part, the match at Mount Field marked a return to action for midfielder Mary Griffiths, who picked up the club’s Player of the Match award.

Griffiths missed the previous season, and her return for the new campaign was one of a number of positives picked up pre-match by manager Nyasha Mwamuka.

Rosie Hughes scored five goals to continue her remarkable record against Llanfair United, as Wrexham put six past their Powys opponents for the second time in as many games.

Hughes – who has now scored hat-tricks in five of her six Wrexham appearances against Llanfair – was in imperious form in front of goal once again, scoring four times before the break.

She laid on Libby Mackenzie for Wrexham’s fifth and then capped her fine afternoon by rounding off the scoring after the break.

It meant a winning start to life at the team’s new home ground, Rhos Aelwyd FC, and a winning start to the 2022/23 Genero Adran Trophy campaign.

Having beaten Llanfair 6-0 at Mount Field three weeks ago, it was a slightly-changed Wrexham line-up for this second encounter.

Erin Lovett missed out through suspension and Ella Clifton-Stringer with injury, meaning Megan Buckley and Lili Jones came into the starting line-up.

Fit-again Amber Lightfoot and fellow forward Sophie Hodson were also starters, in place of Ava Suckley and Mia Roberts.

Having scored a hat-trick in that first game of the season, Hughes wasted no time opening her account for this game too.

Just 11 minutes in, the prolific striker was on the scoresheet – her 52^nd Wrexham goal giving the Red Dragons the lead.

Five minutes later, Rebecca Pritchard laid on Hughes for her second of the afternoon, and she completed her hat-trick in the 34^th minute.

She was not done there either, as three minutes later captain Kim Dutton teed Hughes up to score her fourth of the afternoon and give Wrexham a commanding half-time lead.

Libby Mackenzie got in on the act with her second of the season on the hour-mark – Hughes this time turning provider.

And on 66 minutes, the striker made it 6-0 – the second time she has scored five against Llanfair in her Wrexham career.

Lauren McCaffrey, Ava Suckley and Bethan Jones were all introduced from the bench, and Wrexham ensured they recorded a 6-0 win for the second time in as many games – sealing back-to-back clean sheets in the process too.
