Jenkins and Towse on call as Reds secure three points

1 December 2021

Wrexham AFC Youth returned to winning ways this afternoon as impact substitute Jake Towse and captain Tom Jenkins turned the game on it's head to hand Dan Nolan's side victory.

Toby Humphries gave the visitors the lead on 51 minutes as he converted a penalty, before Jake Towse came off the bench to finish superbly from a Dan Jones through ball.

With three minutes remaining Joe Fountain - outstanding throughout - was fouled in the box and the skipper Jenkins duly dispathed the spot kick to secure a turnaround victory.

Both sides started with equal quality with chances at a premium, the first sighter of goal took 19 minutes as Owen Cushion's shot from distance kissed the top of the crossbar.

FC United began to dominate play in the final third but rarely troubled Louis Parr in goal, and Wrexham grew into the game throughout.

Kai Evans has two first half chances with a shot from distance smartly saved by the keeper before moments later having a go from close range, but the keeper smothered the ball well.

Half-Time: Wrexham 0-0 FCUM

At half-time Wrexham made an enforced switch as Rowan Davies was replaced by Aaron James. Six minutes into the second period FC United would take the lead.

Will Mountfield brought his man down in the box and Humphries lashed it home past Parr who - to his credit - went the right way.

Evans had a chance to level moments later as Jenkins threaded a ball through, but he failed to hit the target. In the latter stages, Evans again tested the goalkeeper who made a save before smashing the ball over on the rebound.

Beforehand, Towse had replaced Jacob Milner and made an immedite impact from the bench. Jones slotted the forward through who raced through on goal, shrugged off a defender and put the ball into the bottom left corner to level.

By this point Wrexham were firmly on top with regular forays into the FC United final third, but were unable to get that all-important second.

That was of course until three minutes from time, when Fountain raced through and got to the byline before being brought down and awarded a penalty. Jenkins stepped up for the pressure kick and duly delivered to the bottom left corner and the points went the way of Wrexham.
