Wrexham win at Yockings Park

19 July 2021

Wrexham AFC Women continued their fine form this summer with a convincing 4-0 victory over Whichurch Alport at Yockings Park on Sunday.

A Lauren Reese brace and goals from Teleri Williams and Becky Pritchard sealed a fine win in the baking hot sunshine in Shropshire.

Caretaker boss Steve Dale was assisted by Gareth Owen for the trip with the former maintaining a 100% win record.

Wrexham led after just three minutes as Reese stepped up to take a free-kick 25-yards out. She struck the ball well into the top right corner with the keeper only able to push it on to the underside of the bar before it nestled in the back of the net.

The heat at Alport had a clear effect on procedings with both sides combating the elements throughout, with regular water breaks needed in order to continue. Following a stoppage midway through the first period Wrexham doubled their lead, with Libby McKenzie winning a penalty. Up stepped Pritchard who rifled an effort in to the top corner to double the Dragons' advantage.

Half-Time: Whitchurch Alport 0-2 Wrexham

The second period was slower in pace with the heat continuing to play it's part, but Wrexham remained on top carving out chances through Reese and Jodie Richards who were unable to find the target. Alport's goalkeeper earned real credit with a string of fine saves to deny the Wrexham forwards.

On the hour mark Wrexham made it 3-0, Williams made a superb run off the ball and was slid through one-on-one, finishing calmly into the bottom right corner.

Just before the final whistle the Reds made it four, with McKenzie's shot blocked before Reese smartly finished a follow up. Seconds later, Wrexham were awarded a second penalty but McKenzie fired over the bar.

Wrexham now move on to face Shrewsbury Town at Colliers Park next Sunday.
