REPORT | WREXHAM AFC WOMEN 1-2 SHREWSBURY TOWN

Late goals thwart the Dragons

25 July 2021

Wrexham AFC Women suffered their first loss under the caretaker managment of Steve Dale on Sunday as two late Shrewsbury goals denied victory at Colliers Park.

Lauren Reese's first half finish saw Wrexham lead for the majority of the afternoon, but two strikes in the final 20 minutes ensured it was Shrewsbury who returned home with the win.

The game began brightly with both sides having good spells of possession. Wrexham's first oppurtunity came after 13 minutes when Libby McKenzie made inroads down the right channel before whipping a low drive into the box, but nobody could get on the end of it.

Wrexham weren't so unfortunate with the next chance five minutes later, as Reese was set through one-on-one, finishing with aplom to give her side the advantage.

Reese would have another chance minutes later with an effort sailing wide before Glendenning found herself unmarked at the back post as the ball came in, only for her poked effort to be stopped by the goalkeeper.

Half-Time: Wrexham 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury were quick out the blocks in the second half, controlling the majority of possession and putting Wrexham under pressure. Just before the hour mark a Shrews forward went one-on-one before Amy Davies made an outstanding recovery tackle to deny.

With just under 20 minutes to go and following some resilient Wrexham defending, Shrewsbury finally broke free with Kat Jones unable to deny a calm finish after a superb through ball.

In the final ten minutes, a sloppy free-kick 30-yards out presented the visitors with an oppurtunity, which Shrewsbury duly took with an outstanding long range effort worthy of winning any game.

In the dying seconds, Wrexham won a corner. McKenzie whipped it in and it fell to Davies who volleyed agonisingly wide, with the referee blowing for full time a second later.

Wrexham Line-Up: Trialist, Buckley, Sharp, Hughes, Rintoul, Dutton, McKenzie, Reese, Owens, Glendenning, Pritchard.
