PREVIEW | Gateshead (H)

It's back to the Racecourse, as we go in search of a third consecutive win!

28 August 2022

Wrexham AFC will be looking for a third consecutive league win when Gateshead come to town on Tuesday evening.

The Red Dragons picked up a first away victory of the campaign last time out, beating 10-man Woking 3-2 in Saturday's late kick-off, thanks in part to two goals from defender Aaron Hayden.

After a tight turnaround, Phil Parkinson's men will be back under the lights in midweek, and will be hoping to sit top of the National League table by the close of play.

Parkinson named an unchanged side at the weekend from the one which had defeated Maidstone United 5-0 in the previous match, but may be without Jacob Mendy after the defender was forced off through injury against Woking.

The manager also reserved praise for the likes of Elliot Lee after Saturday's win, after the attacker came off the bench to make a positive contribution in the second half.

Wrexham trio Christian Dibble, Rob Lainton and Reece Hall-Johnson remain sidelined through injury.

Loanee Owen Gallacher will hope to make his first start for Gateshead after making the bench in their last match against Wealdstone.

Newly-promoted Gateshead have had a tough start to life in the National League, as one of only three sides yet to record a league win in 2022/23.

They would have hoped for a better result at home against high-flying Wealdstone last time out, particuarly when the visitors went down to 10 men on 52 minutes, but couldn't find that all-important goal despite their pressure.

Managed by former defender Mike Williamson, they started the season with three encouraging draws against Dagenham & Redbridge, Barnet and Notts County respectively, and will hope to provide a tough test for Wrexham in midweek.

The Heed were promoted as champions of the National League North in 2021/22, with an impressive total of 94 points and just shy of 100 goals scored across the course of the campaign.
