REPORT | Airbus UK 0-2 Wrexham AFC

Red Dragons extend lead with late win

5 December 2022

Rosie Hughes scored two late goals to ensure Wrexham maintained their winning start to the 2022/23 Genero Adran North season and stretched their lead at the top.

Against a stubborn Airbus side, Wrexham dominated possession but could not carve out an opening until Hughes’ late double settled proceedings at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium.

The result, coupled with title rivals Connah’s Quay Nomads and Llandudno drawing with each other later in the afternoon, means Wrexham’s lead at the top is now five points over Nomads – albeit having played a game more.

Hughes’ return to the starting line-up, having missed the win against CPDM Y Rhyl 1879 the previous weekend, was a boost for Steve Dale’s side.

After her two goals in that game, Lauryn Lyons also came into the starting line-up as did fit-again Ella Clifton-Stringer.

Having put nine past Airbus in their last meeting, Wrexham started on the front foot again but could not make their dominance in possession count.

After two good chances were missed before the break, Rebecca Pritchard was inches away from breaking the deadlock just after the hour mark – clattering the bar from distance.

Dale introduced Kim Dutton, Sophie Hodson and Libby Mackenzie from the bench, but the clock was starting to look like it was against Wrexham until Hughes’ timely intervention.

Amber Lightfoot was the provider on 80 minutes, with Hughes scoring her 70th Wrexham goal – on just her 29th appearance since signing last summer.

After a lengthy delay as the Airbus keeper received treatment, having suffered an arm injury in the goal incident, the game restarted with Lightfoot and Megan Buckley having made way for Ava Suckley and Lauren McCaffrey.

And it was Suckley who teed up Hughes’ second – her inch-perfect delivery being volleyed home by Wrexham’s top goalscorer in the fourth minute of stoppage time to seal victory.

Wrexham now take a break from league action, but they will face Genero Adran Premier side Aberystwyth Town at home next Sunday in an eagerly-anticipated FAW Women’s Cup quarter-final.

Line-up: Morgan, Clifton-Stringer (Hodson 53), Sharp, Lovett, Buckley (McCaffrey 81), Dickens, Lyons (Mackenzie 65), Pritchard, Jones (Dutton 53), Lightfoot (Suckley 81), Hughes
