CONTRACT NEWS | Luke Young’s contract extended

First-team captain now contracted until end of 2022/23 season

3 February 2022

Wrexham AFC are pleased to confirm first-team captain Luke Young’s contract has been extended until the end of the 2022/23 season, after he made his 20th league start of the season last week.

Midfielder Young, 28 – the reigning, back-to-back Player of the Year winner – made his 20th league start of the campaign in the win against Grimsby Town.

The appearance triggered the clause in his contract, signed in the summer, which extends his current deal for an additional 12 months.

And on the contract extension, Young said: “That clause was an incentive, not just to play that many games but to trigger the contract and thankfully, for me, I’ve hit it with plenty of games to spare.

“The Club means a lot to me. I feel like I’ve built up a good relationship with the fans first and foremost, through working hard every day and putting in the graft on the training pitch, and showing it out on the pitch where it matters.

“I’ve got nothing but good words to say about the Club, and we’re obviously settled as a family up here in this part of the world too. It’s a place we’re happy to stay and to commit, especially at what is an exciting time at the moment at this Football Club.

“You only have to look at the average gates we’re getting to see the difference from when I first came here. It shows the fans are right behind us. The aim is always the same – it’s always to go out there, give everything you can for the Club, and take the Club to where we all think it should be.”

Young first arrived in the summer of 2018, becoming then-manager Sam Ricketts’ first Wrexham signing.

And the midfielder quickly became a popular figure at the Racecourse – winning the Steve Edwards Goal of the Season Trophy for his rocket against Dagenham & Redbridge in his debut season.

He went one better the following year, bagging another Goal of the Season for a stunning volley at home to Bromley, and also claiming the Player of the Season award in the COVID-shortened season.

Last season, Young became just the fourth player to win back-to-back Player of the Season titles for the Club, and also finished the campaign as top scorer after hitting 11 goals.

After being named first-team captain in the summer, Young has gone on to pass 150 games for the Club – scoring 18 goals in total for the Red Dragons.

After his contract extension was confirmed, manager Phil Parkinson said: “I’m delighted that the clause in Luke’s contract has been triggered.

“He’s just a terrific player and a great character to have around. He’s got a big heart and that’s key in any game of football.

“He sets the example with the armband, and the way he goes about things in training, and so I’m pleased to have his future secured.”

Young returns to his former team, Torquay United, when the Red Dragons head to Devon for Saturday’s match. You can watch his full pre-match interview here.
