WREXHAM AFC WOMEN | Sophie Hodson signs for Red Dragons

Former Corwen striker signs up

17 January 2022

Wrexham AFC Women are pleased to announce striker Sophie Hodson has signed on for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

The 19-year-old former Corwen striker adds more firepower to the Red Dragons’ attack, as they look to build on their current third-place position in the Genero Adran North table.

Hodson was part of the all-conquering Corwen Girls side – who claimed an Under-16s quadruple in 2017 – before progressing to senior football.

And she now joins Steve Dale’s side at a key stage in the season, with six matches remaining in the Genero Adran North and just one point separating the top three teams.

On signing, Hodson said: “I’m really excited to start playing for Wrexham, especially with the new set-up that they have built this season. It’s an exciting prospect to be playing for Wrexham at the moment.

“I’m from Wrexham, so it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do. It means a lot to be signing for the Club.

“I’m hoping I can come in, add goals and help the team get the points we need to finish the season strong.”

Manager Dale said: “I’m delighted to get Sophie signed and added to the group. We came across her a few years back playing for Corwen and she has always been a player we thought highly of.

“She’s coming in to the squad and will add more quality to the group. Her attitude and performances in training stood out and we felt that adding her to the squad was the right decision to make.

“We look forward to seeing her in action in the coming games in what will be an important few months for the squad.”

Wrexham AFC Women can also confirm several departures from the squad, following the promotion of a number of Under-19s stars into the senior set-up.

With Ella Clifton-Stringer, Mia Roberts, Lili Jones, Amber Lightfoot and Natasha Spearing all establishing themselves as senior players, defenders Jodie Davis, Tasha Commins and Shannon Owens, and forward Amy Glendenning have left Wrexham.

We would like to wish all four well for the future, and thank them for their efforts throughout their respective time with Wrexham. Davis and Glendenning each played five times this season, Commins made four senior appearances and Owens three.

Manager Dale added: “With the recent promotion of those younger players – and their successful integration into the first-team – other players have found opportunities limited.

“Jodie, Tasha, Shannon and Amy have all opted to leave the club as a result, and we fully respect their decisions.

“Shannon and Amy have both played their part in helping Wrexham AFC Women to become re-established since 2018, while Jodie and Tasha played their part this season too and we’re grateful to all four for their efforts and honesty.

“We would like to wish them all the best in the future.”
