Howard: The aim is clear

Our summer signing says he wants to help the Club achieve promotion this season

7 July 2022

Wrexham AFC’s latest signing, Mark Howard, says he is delighted to join the Club, with promotion his only target for the 2022/23 campaign.

The experienced keeper won the 2021/22 Player of the Season award for Carlisle United, as his shot-stopping ability helped keep the Cumbrians in Sky Bet League Two.

Howard, 35, will compete with Rob Lainton and Christian Dibble whilst working with our new Goalkeeping Coach Aidan Davison.

Upon signing for the Club, he said: “I’m delighted, I’ve been speaking to Phil [Parkinson] for a few days now and I’m thrilled to get it done and dusted. I can’t wait to get going.

“I had a very successful period with Phil [at Bolton Wanderers] and it’s a pleasure to work with him again.

“We got promoted with together out of League One into the Championship and managed to stay up on the last day of the season after.

“There’s only one aim [for this season] and that’s to get the Club promoted.”

The stopper’s most prominent period in football came during his four-year spell at Sheffield United.

Whilst with the Blades, he was part of the side that reached the FA Cup Semi-Finals in 2013/14 and both the League Cup Semi-Finals and the League One Play-Offs in 2014/15.

With such feats achieved in his career to date, Howard believes that his experience will only benefit the Club.

He added: “I like to control the game, I read the game well and I like to control the tempo game. I like to speed it up when it needs speeding up and slowing it down when I think we need a breather.

“I know what he can do, and he [Parkinson] knows what I can do, so hopefully I can bring that to the party. Using that experience that I do have; I think that will play a big part.”

The 2021/22 season saw Wrexham draw in record crowds in the National League, with our highest average attendance at this level being 8,640.

With amazing season ticket sales already for the 2022/23 Vanarama National League campaign, Howard added he can’t wait to play at the Racecourse.

He said: “I love playing in front of full attendances so that was something that really attracted me.

“When Phil spoke to me, it was something I was really excited for. To have that opportunity to play in front of these fans will be exciting.”

Memberships are still available for the 2022/23 season, with wide-ranging benefits for each of the four packages on offer for supporters. Click here for more.
