RIP | Geoff Hunter

Former midfielder passes away aged 62

3 June 2022

All at Wrexham AFC are saddened to learn of the passing of former midfielder Geoff Hunter, aged 62.

The former Manchester United trainee played for Crewe Alex and Port Vale, earning two promotions with the latter, before signing for Dixie McNeil’s Wrexham in 1987.

He went on to spend four seasons at the Racecourse Ground, making 122 league appearances for the Club, and 157 in all competitions – scoring 15 goals.

Wrexham proved to be his last professional Club, as he left in 1991 and retired, returning to his hometown of Hull.

Despite having twice helped the Valiants to promotion out of the fourth tier, Hunter’s Wrexham career started in inauspicious circumstances – a crushing 6-1 defeat to Torquay United on his debut.

However, he soon settled into the middle of the park for McNeil’s side – scoring his first league goal in a 3-0 home win against Cardiff City the following month.

Wrexham missed out on the play-offs by four points that season, but Hunter was a regular again the following season helping the team to the play-off final. He started both legs of the final against Leyton Orient, as Wrexham narrowly missed out on promotion.

The team struggled the following season, and McNeil was replaced by Brian Flynn, while the emergence of young midfielders such as Waynne Phillips and Gareth Owen meant opportunities became more limited for Hunter.

Nevertheless, he passed 100 league games for Wrexham in the 1990/91 season, and also made his European Cup Winners’ Cup debut – replacing player-manager Flynn as a substitute in the goalless home draw with Lyngby and playing both legs of the second-round fixture against Manchester United.

He scored in Wrexham’s run to yet another Welsh Cup Final in that same season, and his final match was away to Hartlepool in April 1991.

The thoughts of all at Wrexham AFC are with Geoff’s family and friends at this time.
