Rosie Hughes hits eight in dominant away win

6 March 2022

Top scorer Rosie Hughes scored eight more goals against her former team as Wrexham AFC Women once again demolished bottom-club Denbigh Town Ladies.

Having put 18 past Denbigh before Christmas, of which Hughes scored nine on that occasion, this time they had to settle for 14. Sophie Hodson also hit a hat-trick, and Rebecca Pritchard, TJ Dickens and Amber Lightfoot joined her and Hughes on the scoresheet.

Hughes scored her first after just five minutes, firing in at the back post from Pritchard’s cross, and she scored again in the seventh minute when she headed Hodson’s excellent ball in at the back post.

Hughes completed her hat-trick inside just 12 minutes, finishing low after racing onto Libby Mackenzie’s through ball as Denbigh held a high line.

The striker was in one-on-one again a minute later, but this time the Denbigh goalkeeper was out quickly to stand up and save well.

Hodson got in on the act on 17 minutes, finishing from Phoebe Rintoul’s right-wing cross, and relentless Wrexham continued to push for more goals.

Pritchard went close twice, first seeing her shot from distance saved on 19 minutes and then shooting too close to the goalkeeper as she ran onto Hughes’ through ball five minutes later.

Rintoul and Hodson combined again on 27 minutes, however – the new forward volleying in from another right-wing cross.

Hodson turned provider on 31 minutes, sliding a through ball on to Hughes, who raced inside, rounded the keeper and side-footed in her 30th league goal of the season and 40th in all competitions.

Hughes then got her fifth of the game on the stroke of half-time to give Wrexham a seven-goal lead.

A minute after the restart, Wrexham went straight onto the attack and Pritchard finished low to kick-start the second-half in style.

Hodson completed her hat-trick on 54 minutes, racing in on goal and cutting inside to finish low.

Hughes finished low on 57 minutes to complete her double hat-trick, and the momentum hardly slowed even as Wrexham rotated their options and brought on substitutes.

The Denbigh goalkeeper missed Pritchard’s through ball on 63 minutes, allowing Hughes to tap into an empty net for Wrexham’s 11th.

Dickens then stabbed the ball beyond the keeper on 67 minutes to add her name to the scoresheet and substitute Lightfoot also got in on the act with a lofted finish just moments later.

Del Morgan saved at the back post from a rare Denbigh chance on 72 minutes, meanwhile, and from her long ball forward Hughes raced in on goal for what would prove to be the 14th and final goal of the game.

Wrexham remain top of the Genero Adran North table, and know victories away to Pwllheli and Llandudno in their final two games will seal the title.

Wrexham: Morgan, Rintoul, Lovett, Clifton-Stringer (Buckley 59), Roberts (Sharp 59), Dutton, Dickens, Pritchard, Hodson (Lightfoot 62), Mackenzie, Hughes
