Will Mountfield scored two second-half goals as Wrexham came from behind to beat league leaders Stockport County and cut the young Hatters’ advantage at the top of Division H of the National League U19 Alliance.
After defeat to the same opposition at Colliers Park earlier in the season, third-placed Wrexham went into the game eight points behind but with a game in hand.
Stockport looked like stretching their advantage even further when Adam Rothwell gave them the lead after 26 minutes too.
Joe Fountain pulled a goal back just before half-time, however, to send the teams in level and it was a reinvigorated Wrexham that emerged after the break.
Just two minutes into the second-half, Mountfield – one of the six youth players to have signed pro terms this season – put Wrexham in front.
And he doubled his tally, and stretched the Red Dragons’ lead further in the 69th minute, to ensure Wrexham remain in the hunt at the top.
Dan Nolan’s side still sit third in the league, four points behind Altrincham and five behind Stockport, though they have a game in hand on the leaders and welcome Alty to Colliers Park next week.
