Red Dragons on brink of title after stunning first—half display

4 March 2022

Natasha Spearing scored a first-half hat-trick as Wrexham AFC Women Under-19s ran riot in the first half at Y Morfa Stadium to move to the brink of the Genero Adran Under-19s North title.

Spearing struck three times and Amber Lightfoot and Siwan Williams scored twice as Wrexham moved beyond the 50-goal mark for the season to extend their lead at the top.

Molly Watkinson pulled one back for the hosts late on, but Wrexham were left to celebrate another high-scoring win.

Only NFA Under-19s can now catch the high-flying Red Dragons, and would have to win five from five – starting with Sunday’s match against Northop Hall – to do so.

Even then, a point for Wrexham in their final game, against the Hall, will be enough to seal the title in their debut season.

When the teams last met, in their opening game of the season, it had been a close match only settled after the break.

But this time, Williams got the ball rolling after just four minutes – Lightfoot providing the first of three assists to tee up the goal.

Four minutes later, two of the Under-19s to have made an impression for the senior team this season combined – Mia Roberts setting up Spearing for her first of the afternoon.

Lightfoot got in on the act on 16 minutes, and then set up Williams again on 25 minutes as Wrexham stormed into a commanding lead.

Roberts and Spearing then combined again on 35 minutes to make it five, and Spearing completed her hat-trick five minutes later – as Lightfoot completed a hat-trick of assists.

Lightfoot sealed a fine first-half performance with her second of the evening two minutes before half-time as Wrexham went into the break 7-0 up.

Wrexham took the opportunity to rest Lightfoot and Mia Roberts for the second-half, as Jasmine Cudlip and Maddie Jones came on, and the Red Dragons made further changes as the half continued as Megan Buckley and Tesni Roberts were also introduced.

Molly Watkinson pulled one back for the hosts on 86 minutes, but Wrexham’s dominant first-half performance means they close in on the title.

Team: Hollway, Dunkerley, Clifton-Stringer, Megan Jones, M.Roberts (Maddie Jones 46), Cotgrave (Buckley 57), Orme, Spearing (T.Roberts 66), Lightfoot (Cudlip 46), Harley, S.Williams
