Amber Lightfoot scores three as champions finish the season in style

25 March 2022

Amber Lightfoot scored a hat-trick as Wrexham AFC Women Under-19s finished their title-winning Genero Adran U19s North League season with a stylish win.

Lightfoot scored three times, Natasha Spearing twice and Lili Jones and Siwan Williams once apiece as Wrexham thrashed bottom-club Northop Hall Ladies with an accomplished performance.

Already confirmed as champions after NFA’s midweek loss, it was the perfect end to the league campaign for the Red Dragons, as Jones and Ella Clifton-Stringer lifted the trophy amid great celebrations at Colliers Park.

Spearing took less than a minute to open the scoring, firing in from close-range from a corner to make the perfect start.

Williams then doubled the lead on four minutes, after Erin Dunkerley’s clever flick-on, firing powerfully off the underside of the bar and in.

Lightfoot made it three on 11 minutes, finishing low into the bottom corner after Lili Jones’ threaded the ball through with the outside of her foot.

And it could have been even more on the quarter-hour, when Spearing released Williams, but the Northop Hall goalkeeper did well to parry clear.

In front of a large, jovial crowd at Colliers Park, however, Wrexham continued to dominate and Lightfoot rounded the goalkeeper to make it 4-0 on 26 minutes.

Wrexham’s fifth goal was the pick of the bunch five minutes later, when Jones unleashed a dipping shot from long-range that soared high into the net.

Spearing scored her second of the game on 39 minutes, with a close-range shot that the goalkeeper got a touch too.

And just a minute after the restart, Lightfoot completed her hat-trick with a low finish into the far corner.

Wrexham made changes in the second-half, with Lightfoot and Spearing among those to make way.

And one substitute, Maddie Jones, went close to extending the lead on 57 minutes when her shot was saved well and she shot over from the rebound.

A further tactical shuffle late on saw Clifton-Stringer move up front, and she headed just wide from a corner on 82 minutes before her low shot was blocked after a mazy run minutes later.

The full-time whistle sparked the start of jubilant celebrations, however, at the end of a fine first season at Under-19s level.

In front of supporters and parents, Jones and Clifton-Stringer lifted the Genero Adran U19s North title to crown a fine first season.

Wrexham will now take on southern champions Cardiff City in an end-of-season play-off that will determine the best Under-19s team in the country.

Line-up: Bellis-Hollway, Dunkerley, Clifton-Stringer, Megan Jones, M.Roberts (Cudlip 79), L.Jones, Orme, Harley (Maddie Jones 53), Spearing (Hardstaff 50), Lightfoot (T.Roberts 58), S.Williams (M.Williams 79).
