Rosie Hughes scores six goals in cup win against top-flight opponents

20 November 2022

Rosie Hughes scored an incredible six goals and set up Amber Lightfoot for Wrexham’s other in a stunning 7-1 win at home to Abergavenny in the Adran Trophy second round.

Hughes returned to the starting line-up after the team scored nine in her absence last weekend, and made up for lost time with a brilliant individual performance against top-flight opposition.

The match had actually been quite even, despite Hughes giving Wrexham the lead, until the striker scored another, hit the post and then set up Lightfoot in a brilliant end to the first half.

Hughes then added an incredible four more goals after the break, though the visitors did pull one consolation back.

The result means Wrexham have now beaten two Adran Premier teams this season, having also seen off TNS in the FAW Women’s Cup, and have now reached the quarter-finals of both competitions.

Both sides had actually started patiently at Rhos Aelwyd, with the visitors shooting over from distance on 14 minutes and Hughes’ hooked volley wide moments later.

Rebecca Pritchard was key to Wrexham’s attacking play though, and the right-winger’s low shot was saved on 16 minutes and her rebound charged down too.

Katie Sharp then headed just wide from TJ Dickens’ deep free-kick on 24 minutes as Wrexham began to exert some control.

And the pressure told a minute later, when Pritchard released Hughes with a threaded through ball and the striker coolly finished into the bottom corner.

The referee played a good advantage on 27 minutes, when Pritchard was fouled, with Hughes racing onto the loose ball, cutting inside a tackle and crossing for Lightfoot, but her volley was saved.

Hughes doubled the lead on 39 minutes, however, when Lightfoot provided the through ball and the striker finished low into the bottom corner again.

A minute later, the two combined in the exact same way, but this time Hughes dragged her shot wide.

On 42 minutes, Hughes went even closer – Pritchard crossed, and the striker stabbed the ball goalwards but her shot bounced clear off the post.

Wrexham did get their third on the stroke of half-time, however, with Hughes central to it. The striker ran onto Pritchard’s long ball, skipped inside and found Lightfoot who finished with aplomb.

After the break, Wrexham quickly settled back into their rhythm and Libby Mackenzie crashed a shot off the underside of the bar on 54 minutes, before Hughes shot over from the rebound.

Lightfoot and Hughes then both had shots saved well by the keeper’s legs on 63 minutes, before the two combined for Hughes to beat the defender and complete her hat-trick.

Hughes had another just a minute later, this time running onto TJ Dickens’ perfectly-weighted through ball and beating the keeper to score her fourth of the afternoon.

Abergavenny pulled one back on 65 minutes, when a low pass was not dealt with, but Hughes won and converted a penalty moments later to restore the five-goal lead.

And she was not done there either, completing a stunning double hat-trick by beating the goalkeeper to Lightfoot’s low cross on 78 minutes to score once again.
