Co-chairman Rob McElhenney was among the bumper Ponciau Banks crowd as Wrexham AFC Women sent out a title statement with a big home win against defending champions Llandudno Ladies.
Rosie Hughes and substitute Ava Suckley each scored twice and Lili Jones also netted in front of a crowd of more than 300 supporters at Rhos Aelwyd FC.
The 5-2 scoreline was harsh on Llandudno, who had gone into the game as league leaders, as they created plenty themselves to contribute to a superb game.
However, while they netted twice, they also came up against an inspired Del Morgan in the Wrexham goal – the keeper pulling off a string of fine saves to help seal an eye-catching win.
Llandudno actually started the game better, but Hughes beat the goalkeeper to a loose ball on seven minutes and won a penalty, which she then confidently converted.
Three minutes later, Wrexham doubled their advantage when Hughes got in over the top and pulled back for Lili Jones to tap in.
Llandudno responded well, however and a cross flashed across goal on 14 minutes before Morgan’s fingertip save just a minute later.
The pressure told, however, as Louisha Doran cut inside and fired high into the net.
That opened the game up, and Mia Roberts cleared off the line on 22 minutes, while Rebecca Pritchard volleyed wide from TJ Dickens’ deep corner four minutes later.
Morgan parried a fierce, 20-yard free-kick clear in the 32nd minute, while Pritchard just could not get a toe to Lightfoot’s zipped cross at the other end.
Wrexham got the crucial goal on the stroke of half-time, however – Hughes capitalising on poor defending to race onto a long ball and finish confidently one-on-one.
Lili Jones was inches away from adding to her tally on 53 minutes, after Lightfoot was fouled on the edge of the box, but her curled free-kick clattered the bar and bounced clear.
TJ Dickens then hit the bar with a free-kick five minutes later, but Suckley – only just on as a substitute – this time followed in to tap into an empty net.
Maddie Williams headed in from Mari Gibbard’s inch-perfect cross on 62 minutes to reduce the deficit but Wrexham again responded well.
This time, Lightfoot threaded in Hughes in the 65th minute, who evaded a wild challenge and squared for Suckley to score again.
The ball just would not drop for Hughes to add another after a goalmouth scramble on 68 minutes, but Wrexham continued to stand firm at the other end.
Morgan commanded her area well, and pulled off some impressive saves – and aerial prowess – in her penalty box.
And Wrexham were therefore left to celebrate a big home win and a fifth win from five so far this season.
