PREVIEW | Wrexham vs Swindon Town

Find out more ahead of tomorrow's Sky Bet League Two fixture

18 August 2023

Wrexham AFC return to action this weekend, when Swindon Town visit the STōK Cae Ras, as the Red Dragons search for back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

It’s been 14 years since the two sides met back in 2009 when the Red Dragons exited the FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat against the Robins.

In midweek, Phil Parkinson’s side secured the first three points of the campaign, in a clinical 4-2 victory against Walsall.

Will Boyle kickstarted his home debut in fine fashion, with a leaping header nestling into the top corner inside the opening ten minutes.

Ollie Palmer doubled the lead with an audacious strike from 25 yards out, with a first-time volley looping over Owen Evans.

The Saddlers pulled one back four minutes later, with a well-worked set-piece routine rounded off with Chris Hussey finishing past Ben Foster.

Jake Bickerstaff created the moment of the match, with his tidy turn and finish, restoring Wrexham’s two-goal advantage, and scoring his first league goal for the Club.

Elliot Lee capped off a Man of the Match-winning performance, by slotting past Evans, after picking up on a loose ball on the edge of the area.

The visitors picked up a late consolation, with Anthony Forde diverting the ball into his own goal, leaving it out of Foster’s reach.

In the build-up to this weekend’s fixture, Phil Parkinson spoke in his weekly press conference and explained he is pleased with the squad’s development since the opening day.

He said: “I think we’re progressing both individually and collectively.

“We’re getting there physically but there’s just elements of a game we want to be better at but that’s a normal process.”

EYE ON THE OPPOSITION

Swindon Town come into today’s fixture sat in ninth place, with four points from their first two games.

In their opening game, they let a two-goal lead slip against Crewe Alexandra. Udoka Godwin-Malife and Jake Young gave Swindon the lead, but Michael Williams and Rio Adebisi converted in the second half to complete Crewe's comeback.

However, they earned victory at the weekend against Forest Green Rovers, with defender Frazer Blake-Tracey scoring a last-gasp winner.

The centre-back rifled the ball home from 25 yards, leaving FGR stopper Daniels routed to the spot.

Swindon have played one game less than most sides in Sky Bet League Two, with their opening fixture against Colchester postponed due to a Waterlogged pitch.

In the Carabao Cup, they held League One side Peterborough to a 1-1 draw but succumbed to a 4-1 defeat on penalties.

After Tuesday night’s victory, Swindon boss Michael Flynn spoke to the press and explained he was pleased by their performance.

He said: “It was important to win especially with the five players we had out.”

“It’s just about staying switched on at key times. We didn’t do that on Saturday, but we did today.”
