RIP | David Powell (1944-2023)

Former player dies aged 79

7 December 2023

Wrexham AFC are saddened to learn of the passing of former player David Powell, at the age of 79.

Powell, who was born in Dolgarrog, appeared 154 times for the Club, having also represented Wales on the international stage between 1968-1972.

He was picked up by Wrexham as an apprentice in 1962, where he worked as part of the ground staff.

Following on from his apprenticeship, he earned his first professional deal at the Club.

Powell went on to forge a successful career that spanned over twelve years, before he later was forced to retire through injury.

A talented full-back who could play on either side, he was a part of the 1965 Wrexham side that came second place in the Welsh Cup.

His first full international cap came in May 1968, when he made his debut in a 1-1 against West Germany at Ninian Park.

Over the course of his international career, he earned 11 caps, scoring once in a 3-1 defeat to East Germany in October 1969.

After a successful spell with the Red Dragons, he earned a big move to Sheffield United in September 1968 and quickly became an integral part of the Blades’ side.

His impressive form earned him further call-ups for Wales, and individual accolades followed as he was named Sheffield United’s Player of the Year in 1969.

Powell continued his exploits at Bramall Lane and was a key part of Sheffield United’s 1970/71 team that gained promotion to the top-flight, after finishing as runners-up in the Second Division.

The full-back returned to Wales in September 1972, when he joined Cardiff City on a free transfer.

He played over 30 times for the Bluebirds and was a part of City’s 1973 side that won the Welsh Cup – before retiring from football in 1974.

Following his retirement from football, Powell would settle in South Wales, and remained within the Cardiff area after his retirement from the South Wales Police.

The thoughts of all at Wrexham AFC are with David's family and friends at this time.
