After a disastrous start, which saw Oli McBurnie head Sheffield United in front before injuries to Jordan Tunnicliffe and Aaron Hayden - all in the first ten minutes - failed to dampen the Racecourse faithful's spirit.
And after James Jones' equaliser in the second-half, first Tom O'Connor and then Paul Mullin put Wrexham in front to have supporters dreaming of another shock result.
A stoppage-time John Egan goal denied the hosts, however, and both teams will now meet again at Bramall Lane.
