PREVIEW | Philadelphia Union II vs Wrexham AFC

Wrexham take on Philadelphia Union II in the final game of our US pre-season tour

28 July 2023

For our final game of the US pre-season tour, Wrexham will be facing off against Philadelphia Union II at Subaru Park at 00.30 (BST) / 19.30 (ET).

Phil Parkinson’s men made the trip to Philadelphia after emerging winners in both of our two games in California.

The recent 3-1 victory against Manchester United was overshadowed by the injury to Paul Mullin though, who sadly suffered a punctured lung in a challenge with United’s goalkeeper, lleaving him unavailable for selection against the Union Zolos.

Goals from Elliot Lee, Aaron Hayden and Sam Dalby capped off the impressive display against United’s youngsters in front of a record attendance of almost 35,000 fans at the Snapdragon Stadium.

Dalby spoke after the game of the difficulty to adapting to the weather conditions on the pre-season tour, especially with the heat and humidity in North Carolina, but saw this as a positive when returning to the UK, as the conditions will be easier and cooler to play in.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Union game, Dalby told us how much he was looking forward to seeing the fans out in Philadelphia and how the players hope to display another great performance, like against Man United.

With MK Dons venturing to the SToK Cae Ras in just over a week’s time for the first game of the league season, this final pre-season match will be vital as final preparation, and a good opportunity to cap-off a successful first time in the USA.

Eye on the opposition:

Philadelphia II are twenty games deep into their MLS Next Pro season in the Eastern Conference, with four games remaining in the normal season. They currently sit in sixth position, three points behind fourth place, and so they will be in hot pursuit of the play-offs.

They ran out 6-2 victors in an away fixture against Columbus Crew II in their most recent game, so will be in fine confidence for their match-up against Parkinson and his men.

In the Eastern Conference, Union have the joint second worse defensive record, and will certainly be an area to exploit for the Red Dragons with our multiple goal socring avenues.

How to watch

The fixture will be available to watch on the MLS Season Pass for viewers in the US.

At current, the only place to watch the match in the UK is via the MLS Youtube Channel.
