PLAYER OF THE SEASON | 2022/23 award winners named

Paul Mullin and Rosie Hughes scoop top honours

28 June 2023

Paul Mullin has become the fifth player in the Club’s history to win back-to-back Player of the Season awards, having been voted as Men’s Player of the Season 2022/23 by Wrexham AFC supporters.

The striker, who also claimed the Club’s Players’ Player of the Season and Top Goalscorer awards, received nearly 60 per cent of the supporter vote to claim the honour for the second consecutive season.

Mullin scored 47 goals in an incredible season, which included 38 league goals and nine in the FA Cup – the latter seeing him scoop the competition’s Golden Ball award.

Mullin hit four hat-tricks, against Maidstone, Farnborough, Solihull Moors and Oldham Athletic. He also hit two in the season’s final home game – against Boreham Wood – to seal the National League title and promotion to EFL League Two.

He follows current team-mate Luke Young, and former players Kevin Russell, Mike Williams and Gary Bennett in winning the award in two consecutive seasons.

Elliot Lee was voted into second place, after a hugely successful debut season in North Wales, and club captain Ben Tozer was third having played every minute of the record-breaking league season.

The supporter vote reflected the Players’ Player of the Season vote too, with the same three players voted in that order by their team-mates.

Also winning for the second consecutive season is Women’s Player of the Season, Rosie Hughes. The prolific striker – Wrexham AFC Women’s top goalscorer – hit 42 goals in just 18 appearances.

Hughes – who was also named Genero Adran North Player of the Season – scored the winning goal at the Racecourse Ground against Connah’s Quay Nomads in front of an FAW-record 9,511 supporters, and also set up Rebecca Pritchard for the goal that sealed promotion in the play-off final against Briton Ferry Llansawel.

Hughes beat second-placed Lili Jones and third-placed Del Morgan to the award.

Wrexham AFC Women’s Players’ Player of the Season, meanwhile, is Erin Lovett – the young centre-back having played her part in the promotion-winning defence.

Wrexham AFC’s Men’s Young Player of the Season, meanwhile, is Sam Dalby – the striker having beaten Ryan Barnett and Max Cleworth, who were second and third respectively.

Open to any player who made a first-team appearance in 2022/23 and was aged 22 or younger on the opening day, Dalby claimed the award after hitting eight goals in his debut season.

Although often a substitute behind Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin, the ex-Southend man scored a number of key goals – including the last-minute winner away to Aldershot Town.

He also opened the scoring in the 4-3 win away to Coventry City in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round and finished the season as the player (from any club) with the most assists in this season’s competition.

Rounding off the award winners, meanwhile, was Amber Lightfoot – who added the Club’s honours to her Genero Adran North Young Player of the Season award.

Named for the second year running, Lightfoot scooped the Wrexham AFC Women’s Young Player of the Season Award after hitting 20 goals in 21 games.

Lili Jones finished just behind in second place, with Mia Roberts rounding off the top three.

There is one more award to be won this season, with voting for the Ifor Williams Trailers Goal of the Season Award, in memory of Steve Edwards, to open next week. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more.
