Wrexham Red Dragons’ journey at the inaugural winner-takes-all, $1 million The Soccer Tournament is over after a 4-3 defeat to Conrad & Beasley United.
The American team, managed by former US internationals Jimmy Conrad and DaMarcus Beasley, secured the win in ‘Target Score Time’, just as the match had been reduced to 5v5.
The Red Dragons had earlier got off to the perfect start, when George Boyd coolly slotted home a penalty after Lee Trundle was fouled.
But the American team came back well, and led 3-1 midway through the second-half before Wrexham’s fightback began.
First Boyd prodded in from close range after Louis Lloyd’s header across the area, which left Wrexham needing two in Target Score Time and CBU just one.
Paul Rutherford scored from the penalty spot to level the scores, after Nico Cavallo was tripped by the goalkeeper.
But the American side claimed victory, after a well-worked free-kick, to ensure it was they who took their place in the quarter-final stage.
