PREVIEW | Maidenhead United vs Wrexham

Tricky opponents await as we look to build on three home wins.

2 March 2023

Tuesday's excellent performance completed a trio of home wins, and now we go back on the road hoping to defend top spot.

The 2-1 win over Chesterfield sent us back to the top of the table, and we go into the weekend a point ahead of Notts County with a game in hand. Phil Parkinson named an unchanged side in the league for the first time since the first game of 2023, and it will be interesting to see if he will return to the light rotation which has characterise this congested start to the year or stick with a winning formula.

Certainly, Jordan Davies' recent cameos of the bench were promising, and the Coedpoeth Assassin will be eager to get back into the starting eleven, but there are plenty of players who will feel the same as our squad depth has really come into play in the last few weeks.

Jordan Tunnicliffe took a bt of a battering, needing the physio on twice, but completed the 90 minutes. If his name is added to our worrying list of injured defenders, at least Parkinson now has Eoghan O'Connell available again.

Wrexham must beware, though, as on Tuesday Maidenhead registered an impressive third win on the spin and approach this match with their confidence high. Dagenham and Redbridge arrived at York Road off the back of their terrific win at Notts County on Saturday evening, but were no match for Alan Devonshire's side in a 2-1 home win.

What a difference a week can make. Just over a week before that win, The Magpies were struggling. With just one win in 11 league matches, they were a mere four points outside the relegatin zone, but a confident 2-0 win over Yeovil Town was followed by a 1-0 win at Halifax Town, thanks to a fine strike by Ashley Nathaniel-George.

“Ash adds a little bit of quality to our game", assistent manager Ryan Peters explained to the Maidenhead Advertiser..

“He spoke to us before the game about trying to get more advanced and into positions to score a goal and then he popped up with a goal.

“The mood is good, really strong. I’m sure if you went back into the changing room now, you’d hear the music blazing. It’s amazing what a win can do and we’ll carry on in the same vein.”

“Performances are strong we’ve turned a corner so please come down and support.”

Maidenhead have established themselves as the ultimate party-poopers, as Rob and Ryan know only too well. We won our first two games at York Road, but haven’t managed a victory in the subsequent three games there, conceding at least 2 goals on each occasion.

Our owners' first live experience of a Wrexham match was last season’s tumultuous affair as a broiling crowd packed into the oldest football ground in the world. We fell 2-0 down, Paul Mullin pulled one back but was then sent off – although the ref mistakenly sent Bryce Hosannah off instead! – and Jordan Davies scored a screamer as we dominated with ten men. However, United struck again to earn a 3-2 win.

We enjoyed a memorable win at Maidenhead in 2018. Mike Fondop and Jordan Maguire-Drew scored the goals, the latter hitting an absolute beauty from outside the box, which sent us to the top of the table.

Our first match at York Road was also Maidenhead's first home game in the fifth tier. Manny Smith was the match winner with both goals in a 2-1 win.
