Rosie Hughes bags a late winner for the league champions

26 March 2023

Rosie Hughes’ winner provided the late show as Wrexham AFC Women held off a resilient Connah’s Quay Nomads side in front of a record Women’s crowd at the Racecourse Ground.

Over 9,500 supporters packed the Cae Ras to cheer on the Genero Adran North Champions, and they were treated to a spectacle to round off the league season.

TJ Dickens got the game off to a flyer, with a stunning free-kick from distance leaving goalkeeper Grace Murphy with no chance of saving.

Ten minutes in and Nomads levelled, as a mistake at the back costed the Red Dragons and Ella Harvey slotted the ball into the empty net.

Both teams had chances to win it, but it was the ever-clinical Rosie Hughes who decided the game in her trademark fashion, rounding Murphy and slotting home.

Wrexham survived an early scare inside the opening three minutes, as an overhead kick from Kirstie Kural slammed against the crossbar leaving Del Morgan rooted to the spot.

The Red Dragons fired back in the fifth minute and took the lead in style, as Dickens caught Murphy out with a free kick from 35 yards out which sailed into the top corner.

Nomads came close to levelling almost immediately as Wild-McGregor tried her luck with a half volley on the edge of the area, but Morgan saved superbly.

However, in the tenth minute the visitors levelled the contest. Morgan got caught out of position, and Harvey took the ball past her, finishing coolly into the empty net.

Dale’s side looked to gain the upper hand once again, and a smart one-two between Lightfoot and Hughes played in the winger, but her shot was saved well by Murphy.

The visitors continued to grow into the game, and weren’t overawed by the home crowd, but despite their possession, they couldn’t find a way through the Wrexham defence.

Before the break the hosts looked to threaten once again, with Phoebe Davies hitting wide from distance, and Rebecca Pritchard failing to hit the target.

Lightfoot continued to be instrumental to the Wrexham attack at the start of the second half with a driving run into the penalty area, forcing Murphy to turn her strike round the post.

She caused more problems down the left-hand side once more, with Hughes playing a probing through ball, and Lightfoot was denied by the outstretched Murphy.

Nomads countered immediately in the 65th minute with substitute Tegan Hewitt firing goalbound, but Morgan stood firm to tip the ball onto the roof of the net.

Eight minutes from time Wrexham took the lead once again. Lily Whitefoot led the charge, and Hughes did the rest, holding off Hopkinson before taking the ball round Murphy and finishing cooly.
