Wrexham AFC and Chelsea will host an open training session at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on the evening of Tuesday July 18, Unified Events have announced. The event precedes a sold-out FC Series friendly between the clubs at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Wednesday July 19.
Wrexham’s training session is provisonally scheduled for 5pm ET, with Chelsea following at approximately 6:30pm.
Tickets to the Tuesday open training include both sessions and start at $12. Event presales will begin Monday, May 22. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, May 23, at FCSeries.com.
WakeMed Soccer Park, the site of the open training, features a 10,000-seat stadium and is the home of the NWSL’s North Carolina Courage and North Carolina FC of the USL. The 150-acre campus — opened in 2002 and renovated in 2012 — includes seven fields and will serve as Chelsea FC's training grounds in North Carolina.
The “Wrexham Red Dragons,” a team composed of club legends and other personalities, will also compete at WakeMed Soccer Park June 1-4 as part of The Soccer Tournament, a 32-team, winner-take-all, 7-on-7 competition with a $1 million top prize.
The full club, owned by American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, will then train at Dorrance Field at the University of North Carolina leading up to the FC Series exhibition.
Earlier this month, Unified Events and Florida Citrus Sports announced that the July 19 match between Chelsea and Wrexham had officially sold out, reaching full capacity at Kenan Stadium within four days of going on sale.
