Red Dragons miss out on upset in South Wales

20 November 2023

Wrexham AFC Women were unable to cause a shock in South Wales, suffering a narrow defeat to Swansea City at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Wrexham settled into a rhythm quickly despite their huge surroundings around them at the 21,000-capacity stadium. A first goal of the game went to the visiting Wrexham AFC Women - after a saved attempt for Amber Lightfoot, Carra Jones was there immediately to sweep up the rebounded ball and slotted it into the net.

The Red Dragons led in South Wales, which they held going into half-time despite several attempts from the Swansea side looking to level the scoreline.

A second-half saw a resurgent Swansea side - taking every opportunity to shoot at Wrexham keeper Del Morgan. Morgan made many important saves throughout the match to keep her side in the match, however in the 55th minute Swansea's Ellie Lake managed to find a way past. Just 11 minutes later, a second for the home side put the hosts in front.

Wrexham were unable to find a way back, missing out on what would have been a second draw against the Swans this season.
