Wrexham AFC fiercely fought back to earn victory in the final group match of the 2023/24 Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
The Northern Group B fixture saw Wrexham take on League One side Port Vale in a shoot out for the top spot. The Red Dragons made 11 changes from Saturday's FA Cup win at Mansfield's One Call stadium - with Dan Davies making his professional debut.
The Red Dragons had a bigger task in hand when Port Vale took the lead in the 31st minute - Joshua Thomas scoring for the visiting side. Unable to find the leveler, Wrexham trailed at the break.
A second 45 minutes was all that remained for Wrexham to claw back the victory and claim top spot in the group stage table. Despite chances for the Red Dragons, Phil Parkinson decided to make a triple change on the hour mark to build on the early momentum - Paul Mullin, James McClean and James Jones took to the pitch. Just ten minutes later, Mullin scored the equaliser Wrexham were looking for after an inch-perfect McClean cross. Fighting to the end, the Red Dragons pushed on looking for the winning goal. To the delight of the home fans in the 83rd minute James McClean did just that - not only a match winning strike but a first Wrexham goal for the Irishman.
