PREVIEW | Swansea City vs Wrexham AFC

A big test for Steve Dale's side as Swansea look to close the gap

19 November 2023

After a string of superb wins against rivals for a top four spot, we find ourselves in second place after the first half of the opening phase of the season. There's no let-up though, as we travel south to face a side hoping to leapfrog us by the end of the game.

Swansea City, traditional powerhouses of the women's game in Wales, stand in third place, three points behind Steve Dale's side. A win by more than one goal would allow them to snatch second place, and allow for the Swans to build much needed momentum in their pursuit to climb the Genero Adran Premier table.

For Wrexham, though, this is a chance to put distance between the top two and the rest of the table. It's a feat we'll have to achieve without our talismanic striker, Rosie Hughes, though. Her dismissal in the closing moments of the win against TNS means she misses this game through suspension.

Dale has options as he considers replacements, though. Ava Suckley got some valuable minutes last Sunday to ensure she is in a position to start as Hughes' replacement.

Suckley has had a frustrating season, disrupted by her dismissal at Pontypridd in the second game of the season.

With no midweek games and cup ties scattered amongst the fixtures, it's felt like an eternity for her to complete her suspension, but she took advantage of the cup ties she could take part in. She was lively in the TNS match, and sensational in the first round of the Welsh Cup, scoring six past Pwllheli!

She's not the only contender for a place up front, though. Carra Jones played in attack when Wrexham switched to a different shape in the last two games, and has been highly effective in front of goal recently, her last four games bringing a return of four goals.

A promising run of three wins on the bounce was halted in the most recent round of league fixtures by a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Cardiff City.

LAST TIME OUT: Wrexham AFC 3-3 Swansea City

The last meeting between the two sides ended in a thrilling 3-3, as Wrexham firmly established their credentials in the Genero Adran Premier on the opening day of the season.

It was a game that Steve Dale's side were unlucky not to win, as a resilient and hard-fought performance from Wrexham potentially merited more than the point that they claimed at The Rock in September.
